Punta Norte Orca Research is located on Península Valdés, a remarkable World Heritage Site, situated approximately 900 km south-west of Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina. Keep in mind that by road the distance is much longer; ~1,400 km. Punta Norte is the ‘North Point’ of the peninsula where a small nature reserve is found. At the nature reserve is the public viewing area ‘El Mirador. There are various ways to reach Punta Norte; you can arrive via Trelew or Puerto Madryn (where there are a range of hotels). Another option is to stay on Península Valdés itself at Puerto Pirámides or one of the Estancias. Regardless, you must travel overland to reach Punta Norte and again there are a variety of options from organised tours by commercial operators to self-drive options. Please be note that on the drive out to Punta Norte, approximately 75 km of the road is unsealed (dirt/gravel road). This road MUST be driven with caution (so always allow extra time in your schedule). There are no stores or bathrooms. The only gas stations is at Puerto Pirámides. PLEASE BE AWARE: there are wild animals (and occasionally sheep) who also use...

We went there during the Orca season. We spent 3 full days stationed there and we loved it. On top of the orcas, the rangerd working there are amazing. They are very knowledgeable and friendly.

Be aware that it is a 77 km gravel road from pto piramides. Pay special attention at the intersection between punta Norte and direction to Caleta Valdwz, since it is a sandy area and there are some sand holes that if toy go to fast and dont see them, might get you stuck.

Pro tip: bring binoculars if yoy can, it will be a lot richer experience

Enjoy...

Visited 14/11. Nice views of the surrounding areas and can see the seals from the boardwalk on the beach. We were unlucky not to see orcas as they had sightings on the previous 2 days. The guard was very informative and we enjoyed an hour or two here. It’s a dirt road the majority of the way to get here but fine in a car and you can see other animals along the way (sheep, guanaco, horses, etc…). I would recommend arriving early and having 2 days to explore the peninsular.
