Cueva del Suri — Attraction in Municipio de Cafayate

Weird experience. Neither good nor bad. They ask for a ‘voluntary’ fee to see the cave with a guided tour. The tour is short maybe up to 25-30 minutes. The tour is only in Spanish so if you don’t speak Spanish don’t go.. The guide talked about the community and the current conflicts with the province. It is unclear how much of the information is true. She told us the waterfall down the road is closed after ‘justice won and they closed it’ which I think means the locals don’t want tourists there anymore but really I’m unsure. The caves paintings are extraordinary. Please be sensitive regarding the community; they are facing many issues regarding encroachments on their land from developers and other private actors. It might seem ‘sketchy’ to be collected by a local person and asked to make a donation for a ‘guided tour’, but this reflects a widespread lack of respect for the Kalchaki community and and a lack of legal recognition of their ancestral rights. Paseando por Cafayate, uno a veces se sorprende y esta fue una de estas ocasiones.

Me topé con el cartel que mencionaba sobre "Las cuevas del Suri".

El puesto es atendido por ancestros de los antiguos habitantes del lugar. La visita guiada es a voluntad y el guía te lleva a trepar por senderos accesibles de la montaña, dónde puedes hallar:

-Cuevas ancestrales en las cuales puedes meterte. -Pinturas rupestres que datan de hace mas de 1000 años. -Flora autóctona con las cuales las antiguas civilizaciones que habitaban la zona (Diaguitas), curaban y hasta hoy día utilizan las propiedades de cada una de las plantas locales. -Si hay suerte, puedes llegar a ver aves tales como cóndor Andino, Jotes o los carroñeros caranchos que azotan la zona. -También en las cumbres se puede llegar a divisar llamas, pumas, serpientes y unos roedores de buen tamaño.

-Las vistas desde el cerro son excelentes (ver fotos).

NOTA IMPORTANTE: llevar protector solar y gorro, ya que el clima es muy cambiante, también zapatillas cómodas.

Encontrar el lugar no es tan fácil, pero si vas caminando hacia las cascadas, camino hacia el Cerro San Isidro, en los alrededores de Cafayate, te puedes topar con esta hermosa maravilla.
