Serranía de Hornocal — Attraction in Municipio de Palca de Aparzo

A small mountain range in northwest Argentina with a spectacular zigzag structure and incredible colors.

The Hornocal Mountains are part of a formation of sedimentary rocks that extends for some 310 miles (500 km) southward from Peru. Known as the Yacoraite formation, it is composed mainly of limestones, as well as some sandstones and siltstones, and was formed in a shallow sea between 72 and 61 million years ago (when this part of South America was underwater). Variations in the mineral composition of the sediments deposited into the sea, the chemistry of the seawater, and the life-forms present at the time account for the striking variation in the rock colors. Over the years, these rock layers were lifted up and tilted as a result of tectonic plate movements, then weathered and eroded, resulting in the breathtaking sight that is visible today. To reach the Mirador del Hornocal (one of the best places to admire the Cerro de 14 colores) you have to take the Ruta 73, from the town of Humahuaca. After passing an Andean cemetery (on your left) go carefully on the dirt road that climbs over 4300 meters altitude. Allow almost one hour ride to the dangers of the road. Entrance to Mirador is guarded and entry costs a few pesos that really worth spending. The wind can be strong enough to literally break up the doors of the cars, so be very careful when you open. Those who are not used to these altitudes should avoid the path down from the Mirador towards the Cerro: the return path may be a bit uncomfortable because of the wind and the thin air. Una de las maravillas naturales de Argentina. Ubicadas a 25 kms al este de la Ciudad de Humahuaca (2900 mts snm). Se llega al mirador del Hornocal por la ruta Provincial número 73. El camino es de ripio, les recomiendo ir en 4×4 o pick up. La Mejor opción es contratar una excursión con ADN TRAVEL ( infoadntravel@gmail.com) Por la tarde se aprecian mas sus colores ( más de 14) Pero a su vez el viento, aveces se vuelve algo molesto) Desde Humahuaca se tarda una hora, no se pierdan el mirador de la cuesta de Pucará. Para ingresar al mirador del Hornocal se paga una entrada, all llegar al mirador principal Hornocal (4350 mts snm) encontrarán un domo donde se venden artesanías y aveces algunas viandas para comer y tomar algo. Desde el mirador principal se puede llegar al balcón inferior donde se pueden apreciar los cerros desede otro ángulo. Son 10 minutos de caminata de dificultad media ya que para regresar hay que sortear un importante desnivel.. Si van en 4x4 o pick up , y la huella lo permite, vayan hasta el segundo mirador desede allí podrán ver la quebrada de humahuaca, el certo yacoraite, la rn 9 y el pueblo de humahuaca.

Durante el recorrido y en el mismo Hornocal, con una cuota de fortuna, podrán observar vicuñas y distintos de aves y lagartijas.

De regreso a Humahuca pueden visitar los pueblos de Pucará, Valiaso, Rodero o Coctaca ( importante sitio arqueológico ya que allí se encuentra una gran cantidad de andenes de cultivo pre incaicos) También pueden visitar Ocumaso ( Turismo rural y hospedaje) y Calete Para luego regesar a Humahuaca.

El clima en el Hornocal es similar al de la Puna.

Lleven abrigo, lentes de sol, ropa y calzado para trekking , gorra/sombrero, protector solar, agua mineral y dinero en efectivo para la entrada o para comprar algo para picar + artesanías.

No contraten las camionetas ( habilitadas como remises locales) estacionadas en el puente de Humahuaca ya que las mismas no están habilitadas por la Secretaría de Turismo de Jujuy para realizar excursiones. Además no brindan el mismo servicio que una agencia de turismo receptivo que esta formalmente habilitada para brindar este tipo de servicios ( las camionetas puede n ser más económicas pero la calidad y tipo de servicio no es bueno en comparación al que brinda una...
