Great castle! The place is surrounded by the rivers Dzoraget and Urut (Miskhana). Thus, it is guarded by the nature from three sides, making it a great place for protection! Inside the castle you can see two medieval baths the clay tubes of which are still visible. Also, you can see a medieval building which used to be a place where meetings were held. It was transformed into a mosque. Now it is a church. But you can still see the mihrab inside which shows the direction to Mecca! Must-see site if you are travelling in these marvelous parts of Armenia! P.S. There used to be a secret passageway in this castle. It was leading the people down to the river! The majority of the site remains unexcavated, with overgrown grass and hogweed. Expect to navigate uneven ground paths through the fields. The cliffs are fenced off, which unfortunately blocks the view with unattractive rusty bars.
The person at the box office was quite unwelcoming, which added to the overall negative experience.
I wouldn’t recommend stopping here, even if you’re passing through. There are plenty of more worthwhile sites to explore...
Read moreI really enjoyed it. To be honest there's not much left of the fortress but the walks along the 2 rivers and the views of the gorge are very special. I saw a few foxes along my walks too which was awesome.
Definetely recommend visiting if you're driving through or using Vanadzor as a base. There's plenty abandoned buildings you wander through and explore too.
