The monastery is sometimes called Noravank at Amaghu, with Amaghu being the name of a small and nowadays abandoned village above the canyon, in order to distinguish it from Bgheno-Noravank, near Goris. In the 13th–14th centuries the monastery became a residence of Syunik's bishops and, consequently, a major religious and, later, cultural center of Armenia closely connected with many of the local seats of learning, especially with Gladzor's famed university and library. Plan of Noravank Noravank was founded in 1105 by Bishop Hovhannes, a former abbot of Vahanavank near the present-day city of Kapan in Syunik. The monastic complex includes the church of S. Karapet, S. Grigor chapel with a vaulted hall, and the church of S. Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God). Ruins of various civil buildings and khachkars are found both inside and outside of the compound walls. Noravank was the residence of the Orbelian princes. The architect Siranes and the miniature painter and sculptor Momik worked here in the latter part of the thirteenth and early...

Unbelievable place. I recommend. Noravank is a 13th-century Armenian monastery, located 122 km from Yerevan in a narrow gorge made by the Amaghu River, near the town of Yeghegnadzor, Armenia. The gorge is known for its tall, sheer, brick-red cliffs, directly across from the monastery. The monastery is best known for its two-storey Surb Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God) church, which grants access to the second floor by way of a narrow stone-made staircase jutting out from the face of building, one of the earliest examples of cantilever architecture. Noravank Monastery is a must see place to visit in Armenia. The route to the place is scenic. It is the religious sight an ancient masterpiece but it is also really renowned because of the location and scenery surrounding it. The road to Noravank Monastery is scenic and narrow. After you pass through Areni village, it will wind through canyons and the colors of the mountains change to a bright red and orange. The entire surrounding areas of Noravank is truly surreal. It is located in Vayots Dzor province, Noravank Monastery is considered to be one of the most old pieces of architecture in Armenia and it is said that has faced many renaissances and renovations throughout its rich history.

Noravank Monastery, a 13th-century masterpiece, is nestled in a stunning red-rock canyon in Armenia. Meaning "New Monastery," this architectural marvel is celebrated for its harmonious blend with the dramatic natural landscape. The complex’s centerpiece is the two-story Surb Astvatsatsin church, with its unique, narrow cantilevered staircase leading to the upper floor. The monastery’s walls are adorned with exquisite stone carvings and reliefs, particularly those by the talented sculptor Momik. Noravank’s combination of intricate medieval design and breathtaking natural surroundings makes it one of Armenia's most beautiful and spiritual sites.

Noravank was built 13 centuries ago! The monastery stands majestically in the gorge of the river Arpa, and in the gorge, makes the view even more impressive. The exceptionally magnificent landscape surrounding the two ancient churches and the chapel attracts tourists from all over the world. Located in the Vayots Dzor region, it’s a lovely ride through Gnishik Canyon to reach Noravank Monastery. This natural setting enhances the beauty of the monastic complex, and it also adds to the sense of seclusion and spiritual contemplation associated with monasteries. Along the driveway, you will see many caves in the canyon.
