Atatürk Arboretum, located on the outskirts of Istanbul, is a hidden gem for nature lovers, offering a peaceful and scenic escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. This expansive 345-hectare park, dedicated to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, is both an arboretum and a nature reserve, featuring a diverse collection of plants, trees, and wildlife. It’s an ideal spot for a relaxing day surrounded by lush greenery and tranquil lakes. The park is well-maintained with a wide variety of trees, including species native to Turkey and from around the world. The well-marked walking paths allow visitors to explore the different plant collections at their own pace, with some paths winding through wooded areas and others leading to serene lakes, perfect for a peaceful walk or picnic. The abundance of birds and wildlife makes it a great spot for birdwatching and photography. There is an entrance fee, but the peaceful atmosphere and the opportunity to enjoy nature make it well worth the cost. The park is perfect for those who enjoy a quiet, reflective experience surrounded by the beauty of nature, away from the crowds. While the park isn’t as popular as some of Istanbul’s other attractions, its calm, serene environment is ideal for those seeking a more relaxing experience. It’s perfect for walking, jogging, or simply enjoying the natural surroundings. Tip: Be sure to wear comfortable shoes as the park covers a large area, and bring some water and snacks for a leisurely picnic by the lake. The Arboretum is also an excellent spot for photographers looking to capture the beauty of nature. Overall, Atatürk Arboretum offers a peaceful retreat with beautiful natural landscapes and a chance to disconnect from the city while still being close to Istanbul. It’s a must-visit for nature enthusiasts and those looking for a quiet, relaxing day out.

Atatürk Arboretum LocationBahçeköy, Sarıyer, Istanbul Province, TurkeyNearest citySarıyerCoordinates41°10′35″N 28°59′06″EArea296 ha (730 acres)CreatedJuly, 12, 1992Operated byIstanbul University, Faculty of Forestry The establishment of an arboretum was proposed by Hayrettin Kayacık, professor of the Faculty of Forestry at Istanbul University in 1949. Initially, an area of 38 ha (94 acres) was foreseen for the arboretum. Between 1959–1961, Camille Guinet, inspector of the Sorbonne University's botanical garden, planned the road network inside the arboretum. Due to financial shortages, accomplishment of the project took time. Opened on July 12, 1982, it was named in honor of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1881–1938), the founder of Turkish Republic, on his 100th birthday anniversary. It is owned and financed by the Directorate General of Forestry, which is also responsible for the administrative operation. Istanbul University's Faculty of Forestry is the scientific partner of the park's executive board.[1] The main goal of the arboretum is to serve the faculty and the students of Istanbul University's Forestry Department including the relevant agencies of the Ministry of Forest and Water Management, forest engineers, landscape architects, domestic and foreign scientists as well as nature lovers in their research work.[1] The arboretum covers an area of 296 ha (730 acres) southeast of Belgrad Forest. It contains the 1818-built Kirazlı Dam (Turkish: Kirazlıbent) and a 1916-establıshed plant nursery.

✨✨✨✨✨✨✨ We were invited to attend an endowment ceremony for the Ansar Association in the forests of Belgrade in Istanbul near Sarıyer, and we spent an enjoyable time enjoying the beauty of the nature of the region, where we see the density of trees surrounding the place, which are more than 30 years old and above. There are a large number of wonderful parks with beautiful views There are also benches for seating and a car park. There are also street vendors in those places There are separate toilets for men and women... The strange thing is that the length of the trees, their density, and the abundance of their branches block the sun, which provides shade for tourists, vacationers, and visitors, and makes you feel the coolness of the place in the middle of summer. You do not feel the high humidity coming near the sea, as these forests are not far from the sea... It is very interesting that the atmosphere is wonderful and family There are several terraces and comfortable seating. * And most of all, you feel (very clean ❄ air and a fragrant smell from the surrounding 🌲 trees. Here you gather with your spirit and your feelings, and you can breathe absolutely freely, and for a moment the brain stops thinking about the problems, the troubles of the world, and the daily worries. Useful summary: I recommend visiting the place to renew morale, increase positive energy, release negative energy, and start a new work week after this holiday and rest.

No food, drinks and picnic allowed (there's screening at the entrance). No restaurant, food stand, public bathrooms or playground. It's a park with an entry fee (higher prices on weekends) that has info signs on the manifold trees, but if that's what you expect it's great. It's beautiful with long hiking trails through forests, bushes, groves, shrubs and along a few small lakes. Not as crowded as I thought. It's beautiful and restful, although a bigger street right at the edge of the park creates a steady background noise. It's good to bring kids although there's no playground. There's swans, fish, ducks, turtles and a few bunnies. Although you can't really feed them if you can't bring any food. I'd say it's a great place to go to if you live relatively close. But I don't think it's worth sitting on public transportation for 2 hours to get here, like we did.
