The Woodworks Museum & Interpretive Centre is located at 8 Fraser Road,Gympie QLD 4570. A group of 24 people from the Carseldine Probus Club had the pleasure of visiting this very informative museum on Tuesday, the 18th of March 2025. On arrival by bus to this historic place, we were warmly greeted by the volunteer staff who, from the getgo, made the whole day absolutely worthwhile. A little bit of history of history about the Woodworks Museum, it officially received its name at the grand opening on March 23rd 1984. It was established to provide a refuge for the history of the forest & timber industries. Built in 1984 as a joint venture between what was then known as the Department of Forestry & Queensland Museum, its development was largely due to the continuing concern by Forestry officers for the preservation of the artifacts & traditions associated with: forest development & conservation, production & distribution of timber, & timber products. Some of the must-see areas to take advantage of are the Steam Driven Sawmill. The boiler was made by Evans Anderson & Phelan Pty Ltd at Kangaroo Point,Brisbane. It is just fascinating to see the frame saw imitating mechanically the action of the manpowered pit saw. It was the earliest & simplest of saws used for breaking down logs. The authentic Black Smith shop is another area where you can sit down & watch how a Blacksmith goes about making tools as what would have been used back in the early stages of the timber industry. The Woodworks Museum building is notable in & of itself, built chiefly from rough-sawn tallowwood & spotted gum. The construction reflects the bush-style architecture that follows the rolling topography of the site. There is a well stocked gift shop in this building & the time spent visiting this part of the museum is worth the money. It was an absolute delight to be able to spend a few hours visiting this magnificent museum & then enjoying a BBQ onsite before making our journey back to Brisbane.

We visited this museum on its 35 anniversary and sadly arriving at 3pm we were the first visitors for the day. A shame as the museum is worth an hour's visit and easily accessible off the Bruce Highway just out of town. The staff are friendly and the free guide book is excellent. Exhibits are well maintained and interesting. You won't leave thinking it's one of the best museums you've ever visited but you should find something of interest.

Great place to visit. Volunteers are really informative. We were lucky enough to be there on a Friday to see things in action. There for a bit over an hour but needed more time than that. Only suggestion is I'd love to see more woodwork and iron work for sale

Great place to learn about the history of wood cutting in the area and re-establishment of forests. This is a great setup with great explanations and an incredible display of tools used in forestry from long ago to the present day. Everything from hand implements to motorised portable saws and logging to an incredible range of cross-cut and chainsaws. Friday is a great day to drop in because the operate the steam sawmill on Fridays. Great displays of wood, logs and how they were transported. Terrific for a...
