We visited the Bassendean Railway Museum this afternoon. The museum, despite it's name, is much closer to the Ashfield train station so get off there if you are on foot. Don't go to Bassendean station.
The collection of trains is very interesting with some carriages that we had not seen before - the shower block, the Royal carriage, & the beautiful heavily decorated timber carriages, to list a few. The old steam engines & diesel locomotives are very appealing. We also enjoyed the model train display which was very detailed.
The collection of photos on display, the ephemera such as tickets, advertising, the oral history of employees, and the like, as well as the all the tools, implements, & memorabilia were very interesting. Such great social history about the development of WA, the power & importance of the railway & the strength of the railway families.
There were a few noisy, excited children but most were well supervised, although some parents didn't seem remotely interested in educating their children. There were lots of 'wows' with no explanation to the children about the items or the history. It seems to be in line with the dumbing down & superficial approach to parenting children today which is so sad.
We spent 2 & half hours looking at the collection in detail. My other half took lots of photos & bought a couple of railway maps. It was a really enjoyable afternoon and the museum would be of great interest to any one who...
Read moreA great place that everyone will like. Friendly staff and lots too see. They have more than 10 carriages and train cabins to explore plus a miniature railway layout in one of the sheds to enjoy. The have another shed full of history of Australia's trains and a few interactive exhibits. They only sell ice-creams and hot and cold drinks. Since they don't open till 1pm on Sundays you can spend the morning 8 mins away in the lovely town of Guildford. They have a small playground, a museum and some nice bakeries there.
Make sure to go to the railway museum during rail fest as they have more exhibits on display, open markets, bands, music, tours and mini train rides which are...
Read moreMy favorite spot in Perth. This place gives you reminder that how Australia started by westerners. Once you step inside, your time traveling starts. I can't believe that I could actually get into the old fashioned historical trains from all Australia like this way so even while sitting on the seats, I couldn't believe that actually I was doing that. Really wanted to purchase a yearly ticket and just sitting there on every Wednesday and Saturday. Their souvenirs were great as well. I could get the actual antique dishes and bed sheets that used for those trains. When I think about this place, it just makes me happy. Definitely I'll go...
