Very interesting engineering. My husband planned our entire 3 week holiday around seeing this. Friends told us it was in a different direction so we thought we had missed it, but no! Since we had been caught by a stationary train at the train crossing in Junee (see Junee Licorice and Chocolate Factory Review), we were lucky enough to see an actual train using the Spiral. This was very exciting. Now I wish I took more photos.

This is a small place to stop at if you're passing the area to see the entrance of the tunnel and the railway line at the top of the hill above it. To see the whole spiral, look on Google maps or use a drone. Much cooler if a train comes through but that's hard to catch. Not much else to see besides what's in these photos.

Sure worth the drive up. Bridge leading up to it is a good picture with the shadows forming. There is a great viewing platform and information at the top to the actual rail line and tunnel. Watch out for wildlife on the dirt road. I saw a lizard cross, luckily I was dawdling.

The Bethungra Rail Spiral is great to see; an amazing piece of rail history still in use today.

Unfortunately there's no freight and passenger train timetable (on the information board at the viewing platform) for you to know when a train will be using it. We sort timetable information while in Goulburn so knew to expect the XPT around 2:20pm.

The diagram on the information display is confusing - the one on display at the Junee Rail Roundhouse is a lot clearer and helps you understand the direction the trains will travel. Suggest an upgrade of the...

This engineering behemoth was a masterpiece of it's time. It allows trains to perform a loop through and around a hill while constantly gaining/losing height. Thus it keeps a manageable grade and avoids problems like having to build massive viaducts to manage a sudden change in altitude. Access is fine for cars over a dirt road to a small lookout on your left. Beware the turnoff does not have an exit lane so slow down on...
