📍Looking for wild platypus magic? ⬇️
If you ever find yourself near Bombala, don’t miss the Platypus Reserve 🥹💚 This hidden gem has become one of my absolute favourite places in Australia. Every visit feels like stepping into a secret sanctuary 🦋🌿
It’s peaceful, quiet, and surrounded by stunning nature. You might need to take a little off-road track (watch out for cows 🐄😂), but it’s 100% worth the drive. I’ve been lucky to spot platypuses here before — it’s such a magical moment watching them glide through the river 🦦💦
Even if you don’t catch them (they’re shy and best seen at dawn or dusk), the area is still beautiful — picnic tables, bird hides, and so many places to just sit, breathe, and reconnect 💫
Bring snacks, bring patience, and bring your love for nature. Just no toilets here — but you’ll find clean ones in Bombala town nearby 🚻😉
💚 Forever grateful to this place for the calm, the beauty, and the hope of spotting that little water wizard again.

Read moreDedicated trip to visit and was not disappointed. A short drive out of Bombala with clear signs posted. An idyllic setting we visited 3 times over 24 hours. Late afternoon, early evening and early morning. We saw platypus on each visit but saw the most in the morning when water was still and water disturbance by the platypus more apparent.
As has been described by others, there is a viewing platform present with numerous signage around to educate. You are a significant distance from the river which makes taking photos with phone problematic given the small size of the platypus. You are though provided with a large overview of the river to find the platypus. They surface only for 5-10 secs at most and then dive. Some may find this to be a waste of time, though I found this to be well worth the...
Read moreBombala Platypus Reserve is my favorite destination for a day trip and picnic, especially when traveling to or from Canberra via Cooma. This tranquil and secluded spot feels like a private retreat every time we visit, as we often have the place to ourselves. The highlight of the reserve is undoubtedly the chance to see platypus in their natural habitat, a magical experience that never gets old. The reserve is easily accessible by car, with a brief stretch of off-road driving to reach the car park. While there are no toilet facilities, the presence of picnic tables makes it a convenient and delightful place to enjoy a meal surrounded by nature. Whether for a peaceful getaway or a scenic stopover, Bombala Platypus Reserve is a must-visit for...
