Very pretty drive from Gin Gin to the tunnel. We parked on the side of the road and walked in. Almost instantly, the bat smell hit us as we approached the tunnel. Even stronger once entered. The tunnel is fascinating. Wet under foot to about halfway through, and it was getting very boggy, so we decided to turn back. The bats were flying around in large numbers as we walked through. You could feel them as they flew past you. Don't forget to wear a hat, and I would recommend a mask too. We then drove through. That got the bats moving in their hundreds. Amazing site seeing them all moving off the walls and flying around, but then stopping before the end of the tunnel. The car did need a wash to get the bat urine and small poo off the exterior, from all around the car. It's totally worth the drive. Probably there for about 15- 20 minutes. There is an information panel just prior to the tunnel, which is interesting to read and listen to. Drove back out and into Mt Perry afterwards. Lovely little town.

Amazing engineering feat to think this was all done with hard physical labour rather than machinery of today to get trains through the hill rather than over. There are no more trains but it is well worth the walk through rather than driving to get a good honest experience of the whole feat. Bats can be heard but remain still unless disturbed by a large vehicle. Would recommend the trip. Free and pedestrians have right of way. Reccomend this attraction

Looking for a little detour on the drive north? Boolboonda Tunnel is an interesting stop just west of Gin Gin, Queensland and well worth a visit. Opened in 1883, it is an abandoned heritage-listed railway tunnel that is 192m long and the longest unsupported man-made tunnel in Queensland. The tracks were removed in 1961 so now you can drive/walk through the tunnel where you might encounter some of its current tenants - a colony of micro-bats 🦇

IF IN THE VICINITY pay a visit. 30km inland on the Mount Perry road to Monto. Check this information and colonial railway tunnel absolutely teaming with bent wing bats. Keep the noises down or you will wake up the 20000 bats that call this 200m long tunnel home. Nice and cool and would make a great home as it is only about 25 degrees inside. Smell a little funky. Started out fun then got a little scary as we woke them up. See videos. Awesome sight....
