Magnificent place to be. I often drive here to just sit by myself to enjoy the scenery and wildlife. You may see wedge tail eagles, hawks and pelicans to name a few birds, and it is so quiet. There is a caravan park to stay, and a lot of the tracks around the lake are 4wd only which is great if you have a 4wd as you will likely have more space to yourself. From the highway, this place doesn't look that impressive, especially during the day, until you drive down to the lake and have a look. At sunset, it is...

Only 20 minutes from Ballarat . The lake is a wonderful place to camp and enjoy the water . It is full atm so there is a lot of water with shade right on the waters edge .There are plenty of fish ( carp ) but still good fun to catch . The main camp area is a bit crowded but there is more camp areas to the east that are a bit difficult to access with a van but definitely worth the effort. There are two sets of long drop toilets one at each end but bring your own water and take your...

Great free camp, but overused and underloved by the locals. Bottles and rubbish all over. Picked up a full black garbage bag. No rubbish bins at the area. Seem to be quite a few permanent residents who carry on a bit. Tricky to find a grassy site but worth the effort to find a spot away from the permanents. Total nightmare on the public holiday weekend. Pretty peaceful otherwise. Camp fires allowed, good mobile reception, not...

Lake Burrumbeet is a nice little free camp spot not too far from Melbourne. During the week you can find it completely empty which is nice for a spot of relaxing fishing. I didn’t catch anything either time I’ve been here but scales left behind tell a different story. You may find some of the campsites difficult to leave without 4x4 but plenty are 2WD accessible.
