Didn't really know what to expect at this national park but was really pleased with what we saw. The gorges were amazing. The walk to the lookout over Ormiston Gorge was a highlight, as was Simpson's Gap. Lots of walkers about doing the Larapinta trail, which was good to see - would be a great walk to do. We spent 5 days in the National Park and enjoyed every minute.
Just as an aside, I thought the camping was pricey for National Parks, they seem to have increased it but for no good reason - the facilities are the same as elsewhere for less money. We ended up staying at the free bush camps, which were better as they...
Read moreThe West MaDonnell ranges offer so much. They are the perfect location for a swim (in summer) and to hike in winter....There are many place to visit on the way and all of them are different. From Simpsons Gap just 30 min far from town to Redbank Gorge about 2 hours from Alice Springs. The hikes/walks are all different too and you can choose from the easy flat one to the long steep challenging ones. Up to the Larapinta Trail which stretch for about 223km from Alice Springs to Mt Sonder....so much...
Read moreWe drove to Standley Chasm from Alice. Had a really good look about. Awesome spot. Then drove around the area just to admire the ranges and scenery of this area. Returned via Simpson's Gap. It is the sort of place you just want to stop and watch - in quiet serenity. We were so lucky - so few cars or people about. The colours, light and landscapes. You could go up to Hermannsburg if you have the time. Allow at least a half day.
