This is simply the best park to visit when in Sydney. I had just 1 day and wanted to explore the wildlife in Sydney however did not want to go the usual route of visiting Taronga Zoo. I wanted to interact with animals and understand the unique wildlife of the Australian land. I googled a lot places and that is when I came across Australia walkabout wildlife park in Calga. It was quite a trip from Sydney as I had no car - first take a train till Gosford (quite cheap) and then a 50 dollars ride from gosford station to the park (quite easy to get the taxis) I loved the website where they had described how the park is first of all for animals and only then humans. Also all the money they earn goes towards wildlife rescue programs. If this was not enough, the amazing South African couple (who I got a chance to meet) have also protected the rich aboriginal landscape from getting mined. This was enough motivation. Finally reaching and spending the whole day there was totally worth the journey I made and the expectations I had. I hired a park ranger Luke for an hour. We visited 6 animal enclosures where he told me so much about their individual background, their traits and their unique history of how they got rescued. All rangers I interacted with were so enthusiastic and clearly working for a cause. My favorite was spending time with the 2 year old koala bear Arnie and the miniature pig (not at all miniature) Waffles. In a little over half a day I learnt so much. Spending the day surrounded with freely roaming kangaroos and wallabies and emus was quite something. I didn’t feel like a tourist but a traveler. It was deeply inspiring to visit this park to say the least and I highly recommend this park (please do not confuse this with the Australian Reptile Park which is...
Read moreBeen here recently. See if you can identify the photo from winter 2014 when we first visited. Matilda the red collar kangaroo has grown and got a small bump in the belly. Although she still comes close to you to say hi, we were warned that she shouldn't be touched. But back in the 2014 she was the friendliest kangaroo around that loves human interaction.
I suggest visitors take a look of this place's history and appreciate how much effort has been put into making the sanctuary for these wonderful animals.
It's not like a zoo and should not be treated as one. Sometimes I would rather not have people know about this place as crowd could stress out the animals and they wouldn't want to interact with you.
Though small and little changes throughout the years, this place is still worth the visit as the animals will show you what real outback Australia is like. Good to come for half a day and have a picnic with the animals around.
When I have kids, this would be a great place to teach them about how to interact with the animals. The up close and personal experience is hard to come by.
One tip is avoid going on hot summer day as animals hide from the heat and would like to just chill. You as a visitor would suffer as well as you would be walking around all...
Read moreWe were looking for the place where we can meet and talk with wambat and we wanted to meet other beutiful animals and nature. We stayed overnight in a cottage and booked a spotlight tour and a behind scene tour. As soon as we opened the entrance door, a beutiful staff welcomed us very warmly and gave us very useful information about the park. She also allowed us to early check in as well. Every single zoo keeper and ranger we met in the park are very friendly, lovely and knowledgeable. It was really fun to follow the time table at daytime but I strongly recommend to sleep over at the park and do not miss the spotlight tour and behind scene tour. There is no world to explain that.....so beutiful and unique experience. The cabin was very clean and comfortable but it was little bit hard to control the hot water and cold water during a shower. We had access to many animal enclosures and pet them during the tour. End of the spotlight tour, a romantic camp fire and yammy mashmallow were waiting us. Also you can easily find out a lots of stars in the sky. Beutiuuuuuuuuuuuul..... The ranger asked us what we wanted and gave enough time to talk and pet them over there. We really enjoyed and we will be there again. Lovely happy...
