We had an unfortunate experience here. While we could not fault the setting and the cellar door itself, both of which were beautiful, it was a great shame that the service could not match them.
Despite having booked for a large group, it was clear early on that the staff members on the day were not up to the task. Barely a sip of wine was poured on each tasting, with no accompanying description of the wines or their provenance. Attempts to blame the minuscule samples on RSA laws were misplaced and insulting, given it was only the second stop of the day for many of us and the first stop for the rest. The food pairing was also quite small (do not plan to make a lunch out of it, as we had), although the food was mostly tasty. The bad experience was topped off by one of our guests being collared by a staff member on the way out, the staff member seeking to reprimand the group organiser for perceived poor behaviour. Odd then that our group did not received any complaints at any of the next few wineries we visited that day. All in all, the poor service and portion sizes made it very difficult to justify the $25 (non-redeemable) charged per person.
Given the limited pours, it is also difficult to comment meaningfully on the quality of wines that we sampled, though it was telling that this was the only stop of the day at which no one purchased wine...
Read moreThey were pretty busy but we still got to taste half a dozen wines at our table outdoors which was great. We were informed that the kids had to be contained and the winery provided colouring pages and pencils for the little ones which was great. One of our party bought juice boxes for the little kids which kept them happy. We then sat some kids in the car when they had had enough. The staff were good. They moved us on at 4:30 as they were closing which was fine, but unexpected. We should have looked at the closing time on the website but a 'last call' may be something for the winery to consider. Nice wines, though none stood out as particularly different or unusual to us. They were lovely though. We got a tempranillo in the end. The staff were knowledgeable and despite having a busy day, were happy to talk to us and answer questions. We didn't get to taste individual wines to our liking after ticking the boxes we wanted to try, as they were so busy, but the staff did their best to give us a good range. Perhaps the busyness and more general type tasting was why we didn't find any that particularly stood out to us. We did book for our group of 11 adults (and 8 kids). Bookings essential. Great atmosphere outdoors. Amenities were...
Read moreWe had a fantastic time at Ross Hill winery! Beautiful location and cellar door. We are wine novices but Michelle made us feel so welcome and was extremely knowledgeable! Michelle really made the whole experience lovely and went above and beyond to drop our purchases to our local air bnb so we didn't have to lug it around with us! The generous wine tasting was delicious and paired very well with a grazing plate. We walked away with 3 amazing bottles, two of which we drank whilst in Australia and a particularly good cab franc that we saved which survived the plane journey back to the UK! Thank you again for a wonderful time, from the UK visitors Helen and John who visited on a rainy Wednesday...
