I recently did this journey (Sept 11th & 13th) from Cape Trib to Cooktown and back in a Subaru Forester (06). I believe the majority of AWD’s can do this track (just need to be wary of weather warnings and creek depths) but well worth the journey! Realistically, there’s 30-35km of uneven, dirt covered, steep and creek covered road from Cape Trib that might require 4WD/AWD application (dependable on conditions) but the rest is absolutely fine to drive on in any car. There are some great stops along the way. If you’re unsure (from Emmagen Creek) then ask somebody, observe the type of vehicles crossing the creek that day and check the depth yourself by taking a walk through. Hope this helps! :)

We headed from the Lions Den Hotel down the Bloomfield Track, this is a nice little track heading between Cooktown and Cape Tribulation, not a difficult track but it has gradients of up to 34 degrees so need a car with a bit of grunt 😋, no challenge for the Ford Ranger we hired! What an exciting experience. “Jonique Life” Follow our journey around Australia on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube as we highlight wonderful experiences and magical places you can add to your ever growing bucket list.

Although there are one or two 30% inclines should be no trouble for any 2wd vehicle with some clearance. We didn't even engage 4wd until we explored one of the river banks off the road. For the inclines a few herbs may be needed to maintain your momentum but otherwise, unless you're towing, 4wd unnecessary. This was in April. Great experience, well worth it. Better than the Mulligan highway...
