Madja Boardwalk, a hidden gem in the heart of Queensland, would have undoubtedly beckoned the adventurous spirit of Anthony Bourdain.
As you set foot upon the weathered timber of the boardwalk, the earth seems to exhale beneath your feet—a soft, mossy whisper that carries the weight of millennia. The air, heavy with the scent of salt and damp vegetation, fills your lungs, invigorating your senses. It is here, amidst the convergence of land and sea, that the true magic of Madja unfolds.

Anthony Bourdain, a connoisseur of hidden culinary treasures, would have reveled in the opportunity to explore the edible wonders this rainforest has to offer.
As you venture deeper into this verdant realm, the mellifluous songs of native birds guide your way. Rainbow-hued lorikeets dart between branches, their vibrant plumage a kaleidoscope of colors. Madja Boardwalk is not just a passage through the rainforest—it is a gateway to a world where land and sea converge. Here, the rainforest meets the rugged coastline, offering a breathtaking vista that elicits a sense of awe and reverence.
Venture down to the water's edge, where the intertidal zone comes alive with a bustling array of marine life. Watch as crabs scuttle across the sand, their intricate dance mirroring the rhythms of the rainforest. Wade knee-deep into the shallows, and you'll discover a thriving world of vibrant corals, darting fish, and elusive sea turtles—a reminder of the intricate interplay between land and sea.
As the sun begins its descent, casting a golden glow upon the landscape, find solace upon a weathered bench that overlooks the ocean. Allow the symphony of nature to envelop you—the crashing waves, the rustling leaves, and the distant cries of seabirds soaring overhead. Read moreAnother great short walk in the Daintree Rainforest. We spent a good hour or so strolling through this beautiful lush forest walk. This walk has a great variety of rainforest and then mangroves that cover a lot of what the Daintree world heritage region.
Everything from giant palms to endless mangrove roots crawling with crabs and other great little creatures.
There is a good information booth at the commencement of the walk. The car park is good but can be a tad tricky to pull out as it’s near a blind corner of the main road - take care.
Also if you can, avoid when bus loads are parked there - but if you do get stuck amongst a tour pack just hold out as they move on pretty quick.
And once you’re done, head up the road a bit more to the Cape Tribulation area and get a cold drink and bite to eat from a couple of options.
Highly recommend this walk. Great for families with heaps of little creatures to find...
Read moreReally lovely boardwalk through some fairly dense rainforest. The boardwalk isn't terribly long, and is very approachable by just about all fitness levels. As you walk through, you'll hear the calls of doves and orioles throughout the majority of the journey.
Towards the back half, we encountered a Shining Flycatcher nest with two nesting parents flying back and forth building it. If you go any time soon, assuming it's still there you may have the pleasure of seeing some chicks if you keep your eyes out.
Cons: There are a few mosquitos along the way due to the abundance of fairly still water. This gives rise to associated birdlife though, so it's not all bad. It's also a very popular walk, so depending on the time you go, there may be an excess of...
