A W E S O M E 👍👍 !!! We stayed out here 2 weekends ago and what a cracker of a spot !
Absolutely stunning spot nestled down in the cozy hollows within the Capertee Valley. ( interesting side note - the Capertee Valley is the world's second largest canyon. Capertee Valley is 1 kilometre wider than the Grand Canyon, but not quite as deep )
We spent from Friday morning to lunch time Monday and what a fantastic spot ! We stayed in the "Capertee Cottage" which is like an old caretakers cottage with it surrounded by absolutely stunning countryside, just beautiful. I believe it was an old sheep farm that NPWS now manage with remnants of old sheep stock yard and a shearing shed...its was pretty cool indeed.
We did a day run, via Kandos, out to Turon National Park for lunch and a cuppa and a friend got to try out his new little Suzuki Jimny which he thoroughly enjoyed.
We found a few good look outs too, one was the Airly Lookout which offered beautiful views across the Capertee Valley. It got to minus 5 degrees overnight so I grabbed some good shots down at the old sheep shed of the frost on the old timber posts and frame work. Make sure you take plenty of warm sleep wear if you camp or stay out here in the cooler months. There is a nice creek nearby however due to lack of rain and tributary creeks leading in, it rarely sees a lot of water. There was a few spots deep enough to sit in on warmer days however the water is very stagnant so not ideal swimming water.
Plenty of wildlife to see from hundred, and I mean hundreds of Kangaroos to 6 or more wombats cruising around every evening at dusk which was awesome to see. There are not a lot of 4x4 tracks in here. The main road through the property leads up to a nice lookout on top of the hill - Valley Lookout and there is another trail you can drive too, that takes you up a fair way to the mountain top but unfortunately there was a locked gate preventing any further access.
Now I'm not a big fan of having to pay to camp some where just because NPWS have control of it however I must say in their fairness this site and surrounding bush was bloody IMPECCABLE ! No rubbish ANYWHERE whihc makes a pleasant change. You do require a PIN code to get into the park too and there is no or limited phone reception out there so be sure to get your PIN on booking and not when you rock up out there.
Stunning scenery - beautiful bush setting - beautiful wildlife - just spectacular all round ! Nice old sheep shearing shed and stock yard too, great for photographic...
Read moreThanks NPWS for the appropriate signage to tell us the park was closed for a week!!! We drove down the rough corrugated road for over 30 minutes in our Kombi to find a note taped to the gate apologising for the inconvenience but advising that the park was closed for 7 days for pest control. Couldn't have put a sign a bit further back near the turnoff???? Sure it was announced on the web, but as usual phone service just...
Read moreThis is a 2.5 hours drive from Sydney and has great campsites by the Turon river accessible by 4wd. It has great 4wdriving tracks graded difficult so always travel with a group ready with repair and recovery gear. Lots of river crossings and hard wombat tracks. Enjoy the weekend within the part swimming and fishing or under the stars with camp fire. Take care during fire bans and all rubbish...
