Nestled in the tranquil surrounds of Baden Powell Drive, Appin, Cataract Dam stands as both the oldest and arguably the most picturesque dam in Sydney’s water supply system. A key part of the Upper Nepean Scheme, this heritage-listed site continues to supply water to the Macarthur and Illawarra regions, Wollondilly Shire, and metropolitan Sydney—a testament to its enduring utility and engineering brilliance.

Beyond its vital role, Cataract Dam offers a serene escape into history and nature. Surrounded by well-maintained lawns and gardens, the dam features stunning lookouts that offer sweeping views of the water and surrounding bushland. The Gallery/Museum on site adds an educational touch, showcasing the dam’s historical significance.

Entry is free, and the area is family-friendly, with ample picnic areas, barbecue facilities, and public toilets. The car park is spacious and the site is accessible, making it welcoming for visitors with diverse needs.

Whether you're interested in heritage, photography, or simply looking for a peaceful day out in nature, Cataract Dam delivers a rewarding experience. A perfect spot for families, history enthusiasts, and nature lovers...

The view from the damn is beautiful, really breathe taking. Only went for sight seeing so can't comment on facilities. It does have picnic tables and toliet blocks on site so you could make a day of it.

Accessibility: I found it very difficult to find information on the accessibility of the dam. Eventually, I found something saying it is wheelchair accessible and it is... as long as you know where you're going!

Don't park in any of the parking lots near the picnic area. It's a steep walk down a massive flight of stairs to get there if you do. If you keep a look out, you will find signs pointing to the damn and another very small parking lot right next to the dam wall. Keep in mind there are only about 10 spots for cars, and the road down is two-way and very narrow.

Once there and parked, it's a loose rock/hard gravel parking lot, then large sandstone blocks for the dan wall. I had no trouble walking from one end of the wall to the other with my...

Lovely place to visit, a historic landmark and a scenic place. The dam itself is down a trail, which starts from a car park, playground, and picnic spots. The walk took us 45 minutes to go all the way down, then come back up. If you drive, it is faster, 5 minutes each way. There are some pretty houses and gardens on the walk, with lots of nature. The only problem was that there was a fence on the dam wall, so we could only go a small way. Hopefully, the fence is removed soon, as the walk ahead is very beautiful. Very beautiful and peaceful place. I definitely recommend paying a visit and holding on to your personal items on the wall as it is very windy 😀
