This was a really interesting and fascinating 90 minute tour!! Alex was a superb tour guide with a lot of really interesting stories and extra pieces of information... and has obviously researched more to find answers to questions asked by previous tours. My kids (6 and 14) also found it fascinating. The interactive display and information at the base was also high quality, informative and interesting and we spent an hour roaming and reading and absorbing which was really great value too. Really enjoyed the letters and diaries and the stories of individual people and their experiences, especially as it included some about women, indigenous people and children in addition to army personnel. Would be interesting to also hear of the experiences of 'locals' who lived here at the time and their perspective. My 6 yo also suggested a scale model of the base and planes in addition to the photos. Well done to all involved with the set-up and running of these tours.... an absolute highlight of our stay. Can't wait to see Stage 2 and 3 (kids already asking to come back when they are completed) Thank you so very much for a really enjoyable opportunity to learn about a part of Australia's history that we had...
Read moreI have a panic disorder which means that I have difficulty with being in open spaces and sometimes I can't access open spaces unless a closed in space like a toilet or a car is near by.
I was really wanting to check out Secret Base but I was nervous that I would have a panic attack if I didn't have an enclosed space to access.
I emailed Abigail who works at the Secret base and explained my unique disability to her. She was awesome and really helpful.
I was able to participate fully in the car tour as she insured that my dad could park the car near where was speaking so I can be near the car and hear her. This really helped as I felt really comfortable knowing that I could stay near the car.
I was unsure about entering the museum from the front as I knew by the photos that the toilet was at the back of the mueseum from the photos of the mueseum I saw. Abigail was really understanding and let me enter through the back door. She also said that I could go into the staff room if I needed a break.
She was fantastic and went really above and beyond with accommodating my unique disability. I strongly recommend visiting Secret Base in...
Read moreMy American Uncle was based here during WWII. He met and eventually married my mother's sister in Charleville and they later returned to the USA where, except for a short period in the 1950's when they returned to AU they lived their lives and had three children. We were so pleased at last to visit this new very interesting and professional museum and facility which is a total credit to the wonderful staff and the local Council behind it. The tag along tour was great too, while a lot of the wartime infrastructure is gone, a big secret of great importance is revealed as well as stories of the base and life there during those difficult years. A photo of my Uncle and Aunt's wedding as explained above is even in the displays referencing the relationships between locals and servicemen at the base. Museum staff and my wife and I were blown away to find this. All in all, a top shelf experience in every way. Thanks to Rylie...
