THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE RAILWAY THE COLBINABBIN DISTRICT:

The first German settlers in the area established farms along the Mount Camel Range, located on the hill to the west of the township.

In addition to their homes, they built a school, a post office, and a community hall to serve their families.

In August 1881, a group of farmers formed the Colbinabbin Railway League to advocate for the construction of a railway line that would allow for the transportation of produce and livestock to Melbourne. The construction of the line was completed in 1913, extending from Rushworth to Colbinabbin West, located by the Cornella Creek.

The total cost of the 12.5 miles of track amounted to $42,970. It took a dedicated crew of 60 workers to lay one mile of railway per week, and eventually, the line was extended to the current site of the silos.

The community of Colbinabbin West soon realized that it would be difficult to run the railway tracks up and over the hill to the original settlement, so they decided to establish the township in a more accessible location on the plains, which would come to be known as Colbinabbin East.

This decision led to the founding of Colbinabbin Village in 1893, which by 1913 had become a thriving township — the present-day location of the town.

The first shipment of grain left Colbinabbin Railway Station in February 1914, marking an important milestone for the community's...

This was our first silo art viewing and are planning to do all of them in Victoria and then hopefully some interstate. Another reason to jump in the car and see more of our wonderful state and help the local communities when purchasing goods. The silos are just fantastic and more stunning than what you can imagine when seeing in print. There is a large car park suitable for even the biggest rigs and toilets. A few more benches to sit and admire the art would be appreciated. Oh, a photography tip, mid afternoon has the winter sun directly behind the art making it both hard to see...

Located in the Shiraz grape growing region of Central Victoria, the small town of Colbinabbin shows off the artwork of artist Tim Bowtell on their painted silos which depict scenes of the old farmers picnic, the railway station (no longer existing), a steam locomotive pulling grain wagons, "Lulu", a 1947 Austin CFA fire truck and "Black Velvet" a tractor participating in tractor pull contest. Well worth the trip to admire this striking work. Stop off for a meal from the take away in the main street and the Colbinabbin Hotel is close by and clean toilets available nearby. Highly...
