On our way to Mount Gambier we chose to drive along the Coorong and finally stopped to take in the views of the Coorong Pink Lake. I’ve passed by many times before without stopping, but this time was well worth it. The lake stretches out with a striking pink hue that looks incredible against the surrounding salt flats and nearby fields. From certain angles the colour is especially vivid, making it a fantastic spot for photography and video.
The pink shade comes from natural processes, algae in the lake produces carotenoid pigments, which become more concentrated when the water is saltier. This effect is usually strongest during the warmer, drier months when evaporation levels are higher and the salinity rises, so visiting in late summer or autumn often gives the most intense colours. Even when lighter, the tones shift beautifully in different light conditions.
Be mindful that the road running alongside can be busy, so it’s important to pull over well clear of traffic before getting out to enjoy the view. Once safely parked, it’s easy to walk closer to the edge for a better look at the textures and colours.
If you have the time, I’d definitely recommend stopping here. It’s a unique natural wonder and a perfect roadside highlight on the way through...
