ย ย ย Read moreThis is a terrific beach for families with older children as they can play on the rocks or swim in the sea, which is generally rougher and deeper than the beaches on the northern and eastern side of Philip Island.
There is a long strip of sand - yellow rather than white - but not much shelter so take an umbrella if it's sunny. Depending on the tide, you'll have a lot of sand, or not much, so it pays to check before you come.
Amenities are minimal. A small toilet block and BBQ, and limited parking, but at least you don't have to pay to park. It is only 3.5 km from Cowes, but it feels a world away in vibe, esp. during holiday seasons when Cowes is jam packed and you walk faster than cars drive down the main strip.
But it's the rocks that are the main draw. Apparently, rocks show red when they contain hematite, an iron oxide similar to rust. I'm not a mineralogist, so I'll take that as given, but whatever causes it, the faded red is more than skin deep - the names and initials carelessly carved into them shows that - and it is uncommon so grabs the eye. There are not many of the rocks, really, it's just a little spit maybe 100m all told when the tide is out. But rocks are rocks and you can't help but want to climb them, no matter your age, it's something primal. Unlike the typically sharper rocks of Western Port Bay, these are smoother - and slipperier - so take care scrambling over them, esp. when they are wet.
Red Rock beach is a lovely spot to relax when the weather is nice, and an easy walk when its not, just far enough out of Cowes to make it a trip, but it's a trip...
ย ย ย Read moreNice away from the crowd beach but a lot of dried seaweed along the shores. Perfect for a coastal walk. Dog beach friendly but keep them leashed in case kids get scared. Fishing off the beach for some salmon and mullet and occasional flathead. Squid are supposed to haunt here but havenโt managed to catch any. Car spaces are limited away from the main entrance. The toilet is clean, was amazed how clean it was compared to other public toilets around. Hopefully it stays that way. Please bring your rubbish home and do the right thing so we can continue to enjoy this...
