PHOTOGRAPHY OPPORTUNITIES The national park tracks and stairs are well maintained and signed.
THE ROCK POOL / FALLS LOOP I took this track as I wanted to check out all the Crows Nest Rock Pools, water falls and lookout.
THE CASCADES A lovely easy walk without too many steps. The running water was just gorgeous. The signs warned of deep crevices and slippery rocks. I decided to just stay on the bank and not cross.
KAUYOO POOL I climbed and followed to the right of the actual rock pool, following the sound of rushing water smashing against the rocks to find a fantastic small waterfall on a sandy beach.
Tiny finches hopped amongst the bushes. It appears most walkers have no idea what's only 700 meters to the right of the track?
BOTTLEBRUSH POOL Be prepared for over 200 steps to reach the pool area below. While the yellow wattle flowering above the pool area was "pretty", I think I missed what was so special about this rock pool area?
Half way up/down a seat is provided for older ones to rest and catch their breath. Unless you particularly want to see a body of water in a Canyon.....save yourself the climb up if you have weak ankles or sore knees.
CROWS NEST FALLS There is a sign warning you about a young man called "Kyle" who fell to his death and telling you to remain at the lookout area.
Positives The rock formation is interesting The loud sound of the water fall impressive.
Negative The lookout is obstructed by trees and vegetation. At least make viewing and photography more attractive.
KOONIN LOOKOUT If you are in need of 2.1 kms of additional walking & have a drone to fly, then go for the walk. Otherwise, save yourself the trouble. It's a simple lookout with a larger view of the landscape..... nothing spectacular.
OVERALL The tracks are full of birdlife, wildlife, flowers and large gums. Certainly a beautiful walk.
TIP Skip breakfast and do the walk on daybreak. The birdlife is amazing and the photography less the people. Dawn also makes amazing shadows and softness. You feel like you have the entire track...
Read moreWe loved our two-night stay here. It's only six kilometres from town, but you feel like you're deep in the bush. We were in a caravan, so some of the sites would have been awkward to get into. With a 21 foot off-road van, some of the overhanging trees were a bit tricky to navigate too. We were glad we drove out with just our vehicle the day before to choose a site to book online. (Site 8 was easy to get onto and allowed enough sun for our solar panels to charge). The walk from the campground to the lookouts was good, and the creekside spots along the way were pretty. They would be lovely for swimming in summer, after rain. The amenities were adequate. We didn't use the shower because we have our own, but there is a shower available. Other campers walked to the creek and back for a...
Read moreWhat a lovely treat Crows Nest National Park is! If you're a fan of moss & lichen, you're going to 'ooh' and 'aah' quite a lot on your walk through.
On a weekday morning we managed to walk the trail to Koonin Lookout without seeing one other person the entire time. There were no sounds except for birds, creaking trees and the sound of our shoes along the path.
Reaching the top of Koonin Lookout for the first time will take your breath away. Up at the lookout I found myself feeling small, and started to realise how ancient our landscape is.
If you want to experience a walking trail that is quite different to others around SEQ - Crows Nest National Park would be a...
