You must see this tree! I literally gasped as I walked around the corner and it came into view. This is exactly like the beautiful tree in Avatar, and I later found out that the Daintree rainforest was a big inspiration for that movie. Incredibly unique to this area and well worth the visit. In my personal opinion if you have to choose between seeing this tree and the Curtain fig tree, see this one! But either way, definitely visit one of them if you're in the area.

A truly impressive giant of the forest, the Cathedral Fig is over 500 years old and home to an entire ecosystem within its canopy. It roots, as large as trees themselves, stretch away across the rainforest floor and set the scene for a sublime encounter with old growth rainforest. The tree species, ficus virens, occur periodically throughout the Wet Tropics often creating impressive structures once birds have deposited their seeds high in other trees.

These photos are NOT the Cathedral Fig Tree, tourists have them mixed up with the Curtain Fig Tree, which is a different tree in a completely different location as well.. The Cathedral Fig Tree is more impressive than the Curtain Fig Tree, it's younger and not dying and falling apart, as is the Curtain nowadays, which has had much chopped off it; and you won't get a ginormous bus load of tourists pull up at the Cathedral, as you will every 20 mins at the Curtain Fig Tree because it's easier to access and en-route to their All In A Day Tours like Milla Milla Falls,.. The Cathedral gets much less traffic and is much more quite. But the pictures on this...

Amazing historic Fig tree, I never seen a Fig tree like that big, it feels like your in a different planet being under that giant tree, it feels like your in avatar movie, positive energy around it. Absolutely a must visit if you are traveling in Gillies road which is a road from Gordonvale to Atherton Tablelands. Cathedral Fig tree is located inside the Danbulla National Park not far from Lake Tinaroo. When you get to the car park it is only about 50 steps to get to the Cathedral Fig tree which is a good news to those who can't walk far. The walk way is flat ground...
