A good mix of short walks, with varying grades and most with the excellent views of the city or lake or in other directions. My pick for just a nice stroll with no steep bits is the forest trail which is a loop around three quarters of the way up the mountain and so has excellent views in all directions and no steep climbs, just the occasional few steps and is mostly flat. Several of the walks have interpretative signs on the wildlife, natural history, or Aboriginal history & culture and are really well done. There are many walks to try and so close to the city centre you've got no excuse to not do some exploring. The only downside is the walks tend to not be signposted so you've got to use a map, or just head down a track if you think it looks interesting to see where it goes. Whatever happens you'll always be bounded by the 4 main arterial roads (Belconnen Way, Caswell Drive, Parkes Way & Clunies Ross St) so you can never get get into trouble as long as you take lots of water and sun...

Bare in mind, my review is solely for the day I went. I have no doubts I would rate higher if I went to the observation deck and the view was not ruined by haze on the day!

It has a small exhibit downstairs which was interesting enough. Has some old phones and a bit of history. I'm not all that interested in that history, but it was good for what it was. That part is free too, so you can't complain there.

As I said, the view outside, due to neighbouring bushfires, was terrible. We decided it wasn't worth going to the observation deck, even though I was looking forward to it, not having been there for over 15 years.

The man working there was a good bloke, making the trip worthwhile. Kudos to him for bringing some fresh air!

All in all, my review isn't that fair. It's unreasonable to expect great views in the conditions we experienced. We came there knowing that.

I highly recommend the trip up Black Mountain and going up to the observation deck when there's...

Black Mountain Nature Reserve is a stunning natural retreat in Canberra, deserving of 5 stars. The reserve offers an array of well-maintained hiking trails that provide breathtaking views of the city and surrounding landscapes. The diversity of flora and fauna is impressive, making it a paradise for nature enthusiasts and bird watchers. The iconic Telstra Tower adds a unique touch, offering panoramic views from the top. Whether you're looking for a peaceful walk, a challenging hike, or simply a place to connect with nature, Black Mountain Nature Reserve is an exceptional destination.

Putting the bush into the bush capital, Black Mountain is a real asset to Canberra. Topped by the instantly recognisable Telstra Tower, it is criss-crossed by management trails (great for cyclists) and hiking paths. There are multiple access points, including one through the Australian National Botanical Gardens (the gate is closed outside of opening hours). There are viewing platforms below the tower over Lake Burley Griffin and Civic, and you can of course ascend the tower - there is a cost - for all round views. Wildlife includes Eastern Grey Kangaroos, and a variety of birds.
