Read moreThis place is good for a day out in the summer - take the first turnoff for most of the facilities, the easiest water for kids, and a little playground. The second road, with the loop, tends to be more where you go as a teenager to hang and do teenage type things, though there are often families there as well.
The river is a pretty typical river - the bottom is pretty clean but has a few rocks to keep you honest, and there's a little space if you want to play Frisbee or whatever.
After your swim, either make use of the many hiking opportunities through the Stony Hills Nature Reserve and see the ancient hills, or go to the nearby Cotter River recreation area to let the kids run wild in the extensive playground there.

The water and swimming areas are absolutely lovely, and by far my favourite place to swim at in Canberra. The water is clean and fresh, there are plenty of public facilities like tables, restrooms, and BBQs around the place, plenty of walking trails, and the sand is lovely to dig your feet into. It's important to note that there is little to no cell service up there, so it's a great place to disconnect and be offline for a while, but it also means you can't search up things or text friends -- plan beforehand before...
