The national park is about 1hr10min from Armidale. We travelled here to do the loop track around Cathedral Rock. So glad we came here - it was stunning and we had a wonderful time. We decided not to scramble to the top of the rocks as my ankle had been giving me grief and I didn't want to aggrevate it further. The loop track is rated 4 however I think it should be a 2. The track is easy walking. Getting into the national park to Barokee Campground was pretty easy. It is gravel road so take care. There were some cows just roaming around plus we saw the odd kangaroo too. You can do this in a car - just go slow. We have a 4WD which handled the road without any issue.

What a stunning place. The summit loop track is very accessible (grade 3 walk, although officially grade 4). Still significant fire damage along the way in June 2020. The grade 5 climb to the summit is not for the faint-hearted! It starts simply with a fairly steep ascent up to the base of the rocks. There are many places where you need to squeeze through crevices, jump over decent drops, and clamber up step rocks. There is one chain to assist in the final ascent to the 1500m summit. Spectacular views of Round Mountain radar station and the surrounding areas.

Didnt actually get to do the Cathedral Rock Track (5.8km circuit, approx 2-2.5 hours); however I assume it is amazing. All walks were closed for maintenance. Would have been great if the National Park team could have notified that all walks were closed at the main entrance. Drive from main entrance is on dirt track/gravel and passing by cute cows. Would love to check it out next time - better signage would be appreciated πŸ‘πŸ½

I really enjoyed the climb to the top of Cathedral Rock. The signs describing the track make it out to be harder than it really is. As you get within 100 metres of the summit, there are arrow-signs glued onto the granite boulders indicating where the track goes. A bit of scrambling under huge boulders, and climbing over other one leads you up to the top. At one place there is a heavy chain to hang onto in case you want some extra help to keep from slipping. I found that the granite was not at all slippery. The view from the top is outstanding. There is a radar dome on top of a nearby mountain that is almost exactly the same height as Cathedral Rock. A great place to visit if you don't mind scrambling on large granite boulders. We also stayed overnight in the nearby Barokee Campground and had a lovely time. Firewood was provided by the...
