Very interesting museum with new facilities and likely to grow more over time. The 1-hour tour was very good (not cheap but understandable as it's such a remote location). it was fascinating watching a demonstration of how they prepare the fossils and how long that process takes (years!). For me, that was the highlight of the tour, it was science and handywork in action!
I just wish they had located it a little bit further East so that it would be more accessible and more people could see it. Even moving it to Quilpie would be better... But I understand it's located at the same place where the fossils are found and perhaps also to give a tourism and employment boost to Eromanga and that area.
We stayed for one night in one of the cottages at the adjacent resort (Cooper’s Country Lodge) which was really nice. The stars at night were amazing! I think we got one of the staff cottages as the others were booked out. It was very spacious with a lovely big king size bed with nice warm doonas (we were there in winter). Very new cottage, modern bathroom, good kitchen facilities. Quiet and remote - lovely! For dinner we went to the Royal Hotel Eromanga which was...
Read moreWe had heard of Winton before in terms of dinosaurs but never Eromanga - which is odd because we soon learned that this is where the biggest dinosaur fossils in Australia have been found.
We did the one hour museum tour as well as took part in the fossil preparation program which was great. It's clear that the staff are super passionate about their work and are so eager to share with you everything they know.
The museum tour was a great place to learn how dinosaur fossils are found and then preserved as well as a great chance to see the largest dinosaur fossils in Australia. It's not a hands on museum - so this might be hard for the little kids.
However the fossil prep program is very hands on and with the use of some special tools, the kids get to help remove dirt from real life fossils. This is no gimmick - this is actually important work that the kids can take part in and be a part of the great work the museum does.
You really can't go to Eromanga without a visit to the museum - even if you're in Quilpie its well worth a day...
Read moreFinally made it to Eromanga to visit this museum. It didn't disappoint! Well worth the travel to get here. I took the Museum tour and can highly recommend it. The video included in the tour was very informative and explains the history of the planet in terms agreeable to all ages. The dinosaur bones and other natural history items were amazing to see and get really close to. Our guide was well informed and gave us plenty of opportunity to look around at our own pace. I followed the tour with an opportunity to 'prep' one of the bones waiting to be exposed. It was addictive just quietly using a small drill to remove the rock and other matter attached to the bones when they were found in the ground nearby. I am staying at the Cooper 's Country Lodge, in one of the bungalows. Excellent accommodation, well appointed and very comfortable. The staff in both the museum and the lodge are very knowledgeable, attentive and provided great service. I can highly recommend the Cafe at the ...
