Yes The park I have created is 20 years of life using the amazing west australian hardwood timbers , stone , the landscape and recently I've been building a large gallery / workshop from recycled JArrah . There's no " finished " it's an evolving space nestled in the coastal Heath . The garden is all natural with a small variety of succulents and a fig tree been added .
My work is not for everyone and it's based on the divine aesthetic " wabi sabi " where the beauty of natural form and appreciation of imperfection is inspiring . Handcrafted furniture and homewares are also available with a cafe opening soon Some of the pieces are left to change colour before the next stage of the creation , others are part of a story or an event , Large scale wood carving is an art using power tools and working with the timbers energy At the entrance is an amazing natural piece of a lion eating a wildebeest that many people walk past without even realising . Once you feast your eyes on what's there and walk around it and " see" then it speaks to you
If you don't think it's worth your time I ask you to take the entry fee back but for those who enjoy it and the friends and family they bring along I thank you for calling in and look forward to creating work for many years to come
There's a treasure hunt for kids through the park which is proving to be a giggle and lots of fun .
Call in any time there's lots of hidden beauty in the landscape , light , rain , flowers It's just behind the beach at magical hamelin bay where the history of Western Australia's timber industry started .
Be safe on the roads and enjoy your time at the margaret river sculpture park
I'm not sure what a " local guide " is , fairly sure I'm a local guide and love telling tourists about the hidden gems in the area so any help you need just ask me ..and I'll guide you to the magic that is hamelin bay , cosy...
Read moreI absolutely love wood sculptures and have seen so many good ones in my life. Iâm afraid this is not it.
Three things, I do think the sculptures were quite cool. But unfortunately they all looked unfinished (not smoothened and some not even completed). Of coarse we understood that this type of art is dis cult and takes great time. But like I said, unfinished.
Two, the whole place felt scruffy, you can see into the work shop. Not only that but all the structures along the pathways (such as brick walls etc) were all very badly done.
And three, I donât think the place is suitable for children. But that just depends on how much your children are supervised. Just keep and eye out for bits of wood and unfinished structures. The place also looked very second hand and over grown. The native plants are absolutely beautiful though.
OVERALL, I wonât recommend this place as a âmust seeâ, but itâs not a bad place to stop by and have a look if you have a spare 30 minutes.
(Note to the owner: i think your passion and work is amazing, itâs beautiful to see what can be made with just a simple thought. Instead of a large sign out the front explaining everything, maybe do little signs to look at throughout the paths. Like you would see in a museum. People donât have great attention spans these days, me being one of them....
Read moreThe Margaret River sculpture park was quite a surprise to me when I first visited. The owner/creator of the park, Brendan, is quite a character with a rich background of woodworking and craftsmanship that come together in his giant carvings.
As of Dec 2016 the main building - a soon-to-be gallery and gift-shop - is still being built, but don't let that deter you! The park and all the sculptures are ready and open for the public.
If you need any information, the owner Brendan is more than happy to give insights about his projects and the history of his work.
I rated this place 4 out of 5 stars because it has got quite some potential, but part of the Park is not finished yet. Once it's complete I'm happy to give it 5 stars.
Check it out if you're traveling between the capes and want to see an attraction that's unlike anything else you'll find...
