Everyone I know LOVES this place but whenever I go I get bitten by sand flies and to me it's just not worth it - you can get pristine beaches and lagoons and caravan parks all up the mid north coast without sand flies, although hathead is particularly good for fishing and canoeing. If you've never been bitten by sand flies before consider yourself lucky. I wouldn't wish them on my worst enemy. The itchiest non stop itch for 4 consecutive days. Read moreA quieter National Park to visit we visited Gap Beach and stayed at Hungry Gate Campground. Gap beach was brilliant and the walk there descends through a palm forest with views to the ocean. Hungry Gate has lots of wildlife and giant sand dunes right next door! We went for a nightwalk to the beach too and were told occasionally sea snakes wash up (do not touch them though!) bring cash for the campground, well worth the spot!
