called ahead and turned away.
We called Bago the day before we were planning our trip to ask if we were able to stay onsite overnight in our campervan - obviously you cannot drink and drive. The young lady on the phone assured me that while they have no onsite accommodation, we could stay in the van overnight in the overflow car park and explained where it was and said others have done the same previously.
We arrived the next day and had two wine paddles each as well as shared a bottle of wine before we went back to the van to settle down and eat. Around 5:30pm a lady came to our van and told us we needed to leave in the next 15 minutes, I said I called yesterday and the person on the phone said it was fine to camp. She was not interested in who told us this wrong information, or the fact we are two young women without a place to stay now.
We had to pack up and drive up the road to find a car park to illegally camp in as we had been drinking at the winery. This was a really scary evening and we did not feel safe at all. As I said, as two young women travelling in a camper van in a foreign country, we plan our stops each evening for safety. This case was no different as I had called ahead and confirmed with the winery.
Edit in response: I appreciate you taking the time to reply and your apology. We did ask for permission before setting up camp, we confirmed on the phone the day before and had someone explain where to park the van exactly to us so that we could enjoy the winery safely. I think it’s a bit of a cop out to try and say that we didn’t seek permission, and remind us to do it elsewhere - we would never camp anywhere...
Read moreBago Maze & Winery has been the highlight of our entire holiday in Port Macquarie!! The moment you arrive and are greeted by Kate, the sweetest bubbliest soul who makes you feel so welcome, you know the 4km trek up the gravel road was well worth it.
Then you have a chance to take in the breathtaking views over the vineyard, the green rolling hills and down to the incredible maze.
If you’re heading there for a winery experience with wine tasting & a delicious cheese or charcuterie platter, book ahead. Once you arrive you choose the wines for tasting, grab your platter and head off to one of the many tables available on the beautiful grounds. We spent at least 2hrs enjoying our wines and platter whilst being entertained by families going through the maze. Listening to the squeals of delight from the children as they led their parents in circles, was the sweetest experience. Laughing as we watched them become more and more hopelessly lost but then cheering once they finally emerged, successful.
Our turn came and we too, provided others with the same entertainment whilst they enjoyed their wine and platter. Walking in circles lost and wondering if we’d end up sleeping in this massive maze. With plenty of laughs and perseverance, we finally emerged successful after 45mins. Exhausted ready to buy a few delicious wines and treats before heading back to our resort.
An absolute must do if you’re visiting the area. You won’t be disappointed! Bago, thanks for having us it was an...
Read moreWhat a fantastic place for an adventure 😀 - this was on my list for a long time and I'm so glad we had the opportunity to visit with family. I can't speak for the Winery, though there was lots of people enjoying that part. We were there just for the Maze - and it didn't disappoint - on our way home from somewhere else. We teamed up -Grandpa & Grandson -v- Grandma & Daughter for what the girls thought would be an easy solution. Ha ! We were wrong. The "boys" took off and I'm sure cheated somehow because they found their way out, a good twenty minutes before us 😀. We girls, on the other hand, climbed lookouts, played with chimes, attempted to run and hide when we heard the boys (until we managed to actually get lost), went through some "secret" doors and laughed ourselves silly in the process. Eventually, with ten minutes to closing, the boys panicked and phoned us, asking if we needed help (we did). My grandson asked us to put up our hands to see where we were (hedge was too high), so then I raised my walking stick like a periscope - apparently that got great laughs from those on the other side. The boys were then able to guide us out, with continuous raising of the walking stick and hysterical laughter. Honestly one of the BEST, fun places we've been to and most definitely recommended for families of all ages. Love,...
