A natural rock formation sitting on a shallow shelf that can get surged at high tide. Can be viewed from the clifftop viewing area (approx 200m from carpark along a formed gravel pathway) or if you are fit enough, can take the long stairway down to the beach and view from sea level. If you head down, there are plenty of small rock pools to explore and a nice small beach to rest on. If you venture towards the "nest", keep an eye on the water conditions. If the sea is rough, can be dangerous to venture too far out. Likewise if tide is coming in, your path back might be a wet, rocky one. Good grip shoes are a must, thongs are definitely a hazard catching on rock edges which can be sharp. Whichever path you take, views along the Bunurong Coastal Drive...

A real hidden gem that rewards the traveller who is willing to work to get to it.

Eagles Nest stands out a bit from the nearby cliffs, and is only accessible via a very rocky and difficult route, but once you get there, the sight is fantastic. If you go to the seaward edge, you can look along the coast for a fair distance in both directions, as well as seeing the cliffs looming behind the formation itself.

On a cold, windy day, it has a grim, foreboding character, whilst on a warm summer's evening, it can make for a great place to watch the sunset, and provides a splendid silhouette.

Word of warning if you're going around sunset or twilight: bring a walking stick to find the numerous rock pools....

Set between Inverloch and Cap Oatterson, I've taken my family and guests to Eagles Nest several times now. It is absolutely spectacular at sunset. A great place for a picnic and stroll along the beach below. It can become quite cold in the evenings, especially when blowing a gale. Accessed via the Bunurong Coastal Drive beware of animals during dawn and dusk. There are birds, wombats and kangaroos foraging on the roadside. During the winter, you may even be lucky enough to see whales. Just do it...there's heaps to explore in the surrounding areas including shack Bay, the caves, twin reefs and flat rocks. Keep and eye out for fossils.

To get close up you will have to go down the wooden stairway and walk across the rocks towards this unusual rock formation. Be cautious and assess the water levels thoroughly before you do this. Best to wear non-slippery foot ware. There are rock pools and rocky areas to walk along and explore. You should not forget your camera. Overall a fantastic experience, coastal drive, landscape with breath taking views, and fascinating creations of mother nature.
