Some years ago a uni mate and I spent a night sleeping outdoors at this stunning location. Hiking north all day on seventy five mile beach, we reached Indian Head just before sunset, and started upward. Taking the lead, I hardly noticed a slight movement in the low brush below. A minute later my mate informed me that a snake had crossed the path right below me, practically slithering across my boot. I shuddered, remembering our guide book which described a high percentage of deadly snakes on Fraser Island. Here we were, alone at day's end, at a remote and deserted spot, and with no cell phone.
Once we reached the top, the natural beauty took over our thoughts, and we marvelled at the panorama. The ocean below was a sapphire expanse of remarkable clarity. A large sea turtle was swimming by, with a great white shark not far behind. That night we slept out under the stars, in sand dunes just below the promontory.
When we awoke the next morning, there were dingo tracks all around us, including where our sleeping heads had just been. There was no feeling of fear, just a sense of awe and magic. It was another memorable moment from quite a...
