This natural wonder and iconic attraction, Nature's Window in Kalbarri National Park, is a wind-eroded opening in layered sandstone framing a view of the Murchison river and gorge. Absolutely stunning!

It is a moderate one km return walk, starting with a flight of stairs from the lookout at the car park. Views of the gorge can be seen from the sealed path before the final, rocky component. For those needing a rest on the way, there are lookouts and shaded seating areas along the pathway.

The geology of the area is captivating. Thinly bedded, red and white bands of  rocks through most of the river gorge, deposited millions of years ago.

Be careful near edges, with some sheer drops nearer the Window. A Class 3 hike, with a sealed pathway mostly to the Window. With stairs and walking along a ridge, this walk isn't good for prams or wheelchairs.

For keen walkers, continue further into the gorge system and complete the Loop Trail – a challenging but spectacular walk.  There is no drinking water and limited shade along the trail. Temperatures along this walk can reach 50C in summer, so plan your hike for the cooler months (May to October). Water is a must for this hike - 3 to 4 litres of water per person per day. (Distance: 9km, Allow 3-5 hours, Class 4...

"The geology of the area is fascinating. The thinly bedded, red and white banded rocks through most of the river gorge were deposited millions of years ago on tidal flats. Rippled surfaces can be seen around Nature’s Window. The ripples were formed during ancient times by waves moving over tidal flats in a shallow sea.

Some rock layers in overhangs at The Loop look as if they have been riddled by plant roots. These are actually fossilised burrows left by ancient worms that once sheltered in the sand. Tracks and trails on flat surfaces show where animals crawled across the damp sedimentary surface." 𝙰.𝙿𝚛𝚒𝚝𝚌𝚑𝚊𝚛𝚍

The scariest Milky Way shot I’ve ever taken.

This photo was captured at the iconic Nature’s Window, Kalbarri, after a 4 hour 30 minute drive from Jurien Bay—and what followed was an experience I’ll never forget.

To reach this spot, I had to walk roughly 500m one way (1km round trip) in complete darkness, all alone, in the wild. The trail was silent—but not really. I was surrounded by unfamiliar animal sounds for nearly 2 hours, and in that level of darkness, I couldn’t even guess what they were or where they were coming from.

There was no signal, no GPS, and one wrong step near the edge would mean a fall no one would witness, let alone help. I arrived at 12AM, but the skies were covered in clouds. For almost two hours, I waited—doing absolutely nothing but watching the sky, preserving my “night vision” so I wouldn’t miss my window.

And then, finally, the Milky Way revealed itself.

If you notice a green tint near the horizon, that’s natural airglow—something I chose to keep in the final image because it adds a surreal, almost magical feeling to the scene.

But it was...

The gorges are spectacular, and when you get the actual Nature's Window part which is definitely worth the visit to Kalbarri for, you'll be wanting to take photo's of every single direction as it's just a non-stop vista of wonderful scenery. The stark, red cliffs with parts eroded by water all that time ago and the winding river deep below. Flies were quite prevalent so I would suggest preparing with either the fly nets or a very large amount of the fly/bug repellent as these flies really want to get to know you and don't mind photo bombing. (Can make for some very amusing looking pictures though so I guess there's a plus). I noticed there was also a walking trail leading further along after the nature's window part but would not recommend it unless you have ample supply of water and proper sun protection as it was approx 36degrees at 10AM when we stopped there and it felt considerably hotter. So if you're chasing the views and are prepared then you should go for it, for everyone else who's just stopping by for a few quick snaps it wouldn't be safe to do so.
