Took the family up for a drive and while I knew there would be some dirt road, what we were met with was a mess. We were in my partners Hyundai Accent and luckily I have plenty of dirt road experience because several time we lost traction and even had the car sliding almost sideways.
One section of the road was washed out in the middle with barely enough room to have your wheels each side of it. Had I known it was going to be that bad I would have taken my Rav4 instead. After the pain in the rear drive we get to where google maps say's it is and nothing.
Due to either none or next to no mobile reception we couldn't check any information due to there being no signage. It wasn't until we got home and I looked at other reviews, it looks like we may have been right near it, but again due to no signage what looked to be the actual track down, from the road looks like just a small clearing on the edge of the road.
My recommendation if you are going there, don't take a vehicle that isn't either a 4wd or something will some decent groumd clearance as there were also some large rocks sticking up in the road that could take an oil pan out. Also one of the reviews here has images of a bunch of cars parked, use that as reference as to where the entrance is.
All in all, while the drive was pleasant enough (road conditions aside) it ended up being a wasted drive and realising once we were home that we actually passed by it just rubbed some extra salt into the wound. Decent signage needs...
Read moreSuch a hidden gem! The place isn't marked on the road. So follow Google Maps' instructions and park on the road. The place in about 200 metres from the road. Road to the falls isn't all solid. A lot of rocks and mud on the road. Although we didn't have a 4WD but managed to get there fine.
We got there around 11am and stayed until 2pm. Fortunately for us it was only our family and no one else at the spot. The water was extremely cold even though it was a warm 32 degrees day. You just need to take the plunge. There is a rope tied onto a tree near the water fall which can be used as a swing to jump into the pond. I suppose if you want to be adventurous, you could jump from the top of the falls into the pond. Although I wouldn't recommend it due to the shallow depth of water.
We were at the venue with our young boys, both of whom had a lot of fun. There is a bench at the venue for sitting down. However, there are no public toilets and accessibility to get down to the falls isn't the best.
Overall, an amazing place, fresh flowing water. We didn't come across any leeches of fishes in the pond. Although I wouldn't...
Read moreWhat a great trip out here! Not very signposted and water is i-c-e-y but well worth it for everyone to do âsomething differentâ. Put Waitui Falls into Google maps and it should get you there ok (although no phone service when you are there). Road out can be done in any car, but it is mostly gravel type roads so if you are worried about a clean car getting dusty - it will do (but totally worth it). There is a tree that has the wording âWaitui Fallsâ on it and youâll be able to hear the sound of the waterfall to know you are at the right spot. Park car and walk down about 100m or so (rocky, not a smooth path). Table and chair is there but no other amenities such as toilets, etc. Watch out for the large lizards which may surprise you on the pathway :/ itâs an experience to do for sure! I...
