Windjana Gorge - a beautiful sight and the first official stop on the Gibb River Road when travelling from Derby. It is a relatively easy drive with bitumen the majority of the way. Alternatively you can come via Fitzroy Crossing (and Tunnel Creek/Tunnel Creek National Park). Please bear in mind that you will be passing through quite a few cattle stations, so look out for cattle on the roads and if you happen upon a team mustering, slow down until it is safe to pass. Windjana Gorge National Park has camping facilities (powered and unpowered) with park fees payable on arrival (self check-in). The gorge itself is a short walk from the campsites, with informative signage along the way. Swimming is not recommended due to the high numbers of freshwater crocodiles that inhabit the river. They are generally more afraid of you than you are of them, but they can produce a nasty bite if provoked so please keep your distance and...

What a great surprise. Nice little camping area and facilities. No shop so come prepared. Short walk to the 'gap' where the river exits the hills through a very nice treed gorge. It is surprising how many freshies survive here. The best attraction though is the event at dusk. More bats than you have ever seen fly out of the gorge with an apparent target in mind. It is exciting watch some of the bats swooping to drink and the crocs leaping to try to catch them. Perhaps, given the number of crocs, more are successful than it appears. A walk up the gorge puts you in among the bats, a lot of...

Beautiful Gorge with lots of freshies! But the rangers were pretty rude which made us directly feeling uncomfortable in that place... We accidentally stopped at the camping area to go to toilet after a long ride on the road and the ranger (who was on his day off) came to us and said we're not supposed to be here and we have to leave immediately. If his colleague had found us we'd have to pay for using the restrooms he said. Later on we met his colleague and she was even more...

Easy walk, awesome scenery with a few crocs on the opposite bank, just far enough away!
