This afternoon/evening, I attended the Southern Lights Festival held at Coal Creek Community Park with the 1Step Support Group. It was very cold and wet with light rain and a top of 10 degrees. It was a sold out event meaning there were hundreds of people there. The Coal Creek Community Park is a large area with several historical buildings and shops plus rotundas, footbridges, a creek, a lake and the old railway station. The lighting displays were very impressive with a mixture of bright string lights and backing floodlights highlighting the trees and vegetation. There were many different attractions tonight including live bands, food trucks, market stalls, fire pits, a giant bonfire and fireworks displays. There was so much to take in but I ended up doing several laps of the park. We only stayed until just after 7:30pm when the first fireworks display went off. Overall, despite the wet weather, it was still a very enjoyable event with lots to see and experience.

We went to visit the site for the first time on Sunday 29/12/24 during school holidays. This place is an absolute gem! It is a free entry site and donation is also available. Though a rear spot of the park was closed for maintenance, and not many buildings were open but we still spent about an hour there as this village still offered a fascinating glimpse into the past with the informative displays. The park itself was quite well-maintained for a leisurely stroll. The museum offers a variety of exhibits, showcasing the coal mining history and knowledgeable volunteer (Perry) at the general store which adding to the experience. It was really a fun and educational day out for our family. The staff at the reception desk was also welcoming, and the atmosphere is relaxed. If you're in the area, a visit to Coal Creek is a must!

Coal Creek Community Park and Museum is a recreated coal mining village that depicts the history of South Gippsland; from everyday life, to the coalfields and the early agricultural development of the area.

Come and immerse yourself in 1870s – 1920s rural life.

We are open Friday, Saturday, Sunday & Monday, every day during School Holidays, and all Public Holidays except Christmas Day & Boxing Day 10.00am to 4.00pm – last entry 3.30pm

We acknowledge the Bunurong people as the Traditional Custodians of the Country upon which Coal Creek Community Park and Museum stands and the stories we represent, which have always been part of this land and its waters. We acknowledge and pay respect to their Elders, past, present, and emerging.

I've been to Coal Creek many times in my life, spaced out over the years, so I've seen the park develop over time. Let me be clear: Coal Creek is a wonderful place with a lot of rich and fascinating stories tied into its buildings and displays. The addition of the art gallery at the start is particularly delightful.

However, while the park deserves a higher score than 4 stars, it has fallen on hard times. Many of the more engaging attractions (such as the General Store and the train) either no longer run or only do so very occasionally. The park needs donations, it needs visitors, it needs enthusiasm and generosity - not only to survive, but to thrive once more.

Do visit. Please visit. It's free to get in. Give donations if you can, spread the word, get people excited about this truly fascinating glimpse into our collective past. Coal Creek deserves to be a thriving...
