I tried Rockford’s Frontignac wine first at a small Italian restaurant in Adelaide and the wine so impressed, I contacted the winery then directly. Their 2021 vintage had sold out, but they would let me know when the 2022 was released - and they did. Twice! Such good customer service! I kept them in mind for when I’d finished some of the wine I already had. And then, my daughter resolved to take me there to their winery for my birthday treat. We spent a wonderful day in and around Tanunda region and went to two wineries for tastings. Rockford was the one indeed that impressed. Firstly, their physical situation is just gorgeous… on Krondorf Rd, in Tanunda. Then, their customer service is knock you down amazing and I mean actually amazing. Greeted directly as you arrive, you are communicated with at every point if you need to wait a bit (Covid) outside. The communication is polite, friendly, sincere and with humour. The courtyard outside the wine tasting room is rustic and vintage (pun intended!) so it’s not a hard wait anyway, as you enjoy the charm and magnificent views surrounding the winery. The server handling our wine tasting was delightful… both funny and knowledgeable. She cracked an ‘airconditioning’ joke when we arrived. It was installed in 1850 and works well to this day, maintenance free. Well, they had my Frontignac. So I received two bottles for my birthday and I went for a bottle of their Alicante Bouchet (light red), for my daughter in Sydney to enjoy. Great wine for a barbecue. All of the other good mentions aside, Rockford also don’t charge for their wine tasting unlike the other winery we attended in Tanunda. I loved this little winery and had such a fun time there; I left with some of their delicious Frontignac wine (appeal to appreciators of German style wines) and really enjoyed their other wine too. The Sparkling Black Shiraz is special and should be drunk at special occasions or on a Wednesday, if you’re not getting past hump day well enough after work? A very special tipple as well as the Fronti. The Sparkling Black Shiraz, the (oft) aforementioned Frontignac and the Alicante Bouchet, I would have to say were my favourites. But why don’t you discover for yourself, and make it a treat going to Rockford Winery for a day outing? We did. @more.morsels

Rockford is always on my list when I visit Adelaide/Barossa Valley, and as a long time purchaser I don't face as many of the issues with overcrowding as some of these other reviews mention, but as I read them, I'm at a loss to wonder why visitors want the winery to increase prices and grow bigger just to cater for increasing numbers. What makes Rockford special is that it's a small winery. If I wanted something massive and overhyped, I'd head to Penfolds or one of many other wineries who have lost their way. My best advice is calling ahead to find out when they've been busy lately, usually this is the weekends, but things do change from time to time, and getting there early. We arrived shortly before the opening of 11 recently, but by the time their gate opened, there were over 10 other people waiting and some were very keen to push to the front, despite getting there after everyone else. So be prepared for some rudeness from your fellow guests. That said, I love the atmosphere, I love how historic everything feels and how well kept it all is. Being there always feels wonderful again... and yes, I do usually end up spending more than I thought I would. If you can get along to an event they're hosting or part of, you will not be disappointed, especially as you'll get to taste back vintages that you otherwise wouldn't get the chance to, unless you started buying them years ago!
