What a wonderful and respectful memorial for the fallen soldiers who left this small town to fight (and die) in WW1. Such a tragic loss for this small community. The trees were planted in honour of their fallen sons, and have since died. But rather than remove the trees, they made these amazing statues. Each statue has a plaque and a descriptive story for each fallen soldier. It left my wife and I feeling sad but honoured to have visited the site. When the trees were found to be diseased, the community came together to stand against them being cut down and destroyed. It was pushed for the stumps and lower branches to be preserved by carving or chain sawing sculptures related to the soldiers or war time heroins.
