I love rock art and have visited many areas across Australia over the years, listening to elders share stories about their mob’s artwork. These hand paintings are vibrant, with sharp edges and bright colors. Unlike the ancient Kakadu sites that are heavily protected, here you can get right up close and even touch the art (despite signage asking not to) and there’s no shielding from weather or barriers in sight.
That makes me think these are relatively recent works, not millennia old. I say this not to disrespect the artists or the cultural significance, but to encourage visitors to educate themselves and think critically about what they’re seeing.
