Rating 3.5/5 We managed our expectations after reading all the reviews and looking at the photos. We really don't like crowds but wanted Lake Mountain to be the intro to our kids' first snow experience. We took a Monday off instead of visiting on the weekend and pre-purchased our entry ticket online for cheaper entry. It was a great decision as there were more people than expected there on a Monday but certainly more enjoyable than what it would be on the weekend. Virtually no lines as such and everyone there was courteous. We packed all of our own food & drinks which was the perfect choice. We made the most of it and had a great family day. Positives: - Staff there were friendly and helpful - Good facilities - Retail store and gear hire on site - Carpark out front was very close which made for easy trips back & forth - Magic carpet ride was great - Kids loved the tube run - Comfortable & warm seating area for lunch - Small enough so it was easy for kids to get around without being over-tired - Location and ease to get there was very appealing Improvements: - Very small space for tabboganning - Snow play is in the same area and generally on the outskirts of the tabboggan area - The artificial snow was rock hard ice that actually hurt to "snow fight" - Due to small area, many parts of the snow were quite dirty/muddy - Common areas like dining hall and toilets are quite small for days with large crowds - Tube run is only operational part of the day, has only 1 tube run so wait time would be a long on busy days, and it needs a magic carpet here too - Food options at the cafe weren't great and they were pricey

Lake Mountain Alpine Resort has implemented significant changes for the 2024 snow season. The resort now charges $20 per person for tobogganing, with each paying customer required to wear a tag. The toboggan area is divided into two sections for kids and adults, both fenced off and strictly monitored by staff. The free area is now crowded and smaller as a result of this fencing. The overall cost has increased substantially, considering the car entrance fee ($64 per car up to 8 passengers), toboggan rental (around $20), and the new sliding fee ($20). The car entry process using QR codes is slow, resulting in long queues. While the resort offers 37 kilometers of cross-country ski trails and various snow play areas, the new pricing structure and inefficient entry management make it less appealing for casual visitors. The cafe does offer good coffee and food, but this may not compensate for the increased costs and inconvenience. We go here every year but this will be our last. For those seeking a snow experience near Melbourne, it might be worth exploring alternative options that offer better value and efficiency. However, if you do visit, be prepared for the new fees and potential wait times.

We had a nice experience but in general felt that there was no much to do if you are not a kid. There is no licensed cafe or a nice restaurants. Food from the bistro is fine but the place was very dirty (because it was very busy and people were leaving their trash behind them). Our dougther had a blast with a toboggan trail and the tubes. I enjoyed the tubes as well - they are good value for money. 3 rides $10. There was no much snow and we felt that the 360 degrees camera view on web site was misleading. We checked the camera before we left and it looked as if there is a lot of snow. When we arrived, there was almost none. I had a walk to the summit. That was nice. Parkings are big and well regulated. I got a recommendation to come as early as I could to get the spot in the upper parking just next to the toboggans. We arrived around 11.30am and we found a spot but there were only a few left. However, just after lunch - around 1pm the parking was already half empty. I felt that the best time to arrive might be actually in the early afternoon instead.

I have been going to Lake Mountain for the past 6 to 7 years and have had a good time, even the year when there was almost no natural snow and had to put up with the artificial stuff instead. But this year something went pear shaped for me. After realising my kids have outgrown going to the snow to simply play or tobogganing, I wanted them to get a taste of cross country skiing. When I arrived to LM I was informed that due to an influx of school kids (Thursday morning) attending there was no lesson available for the public. I understand that skiing instructors are a finite element but surely the resort knew way ahead of time of this situation but chooses not to inform the public of this restriction in their website. I checked the website early in the morning and there was no mention of this restriction, so I arranged work and school, drove 2.5 hrs, paid entry fees...to be told I should have called around 9 am to find out if lessons were available that day...then start my trip...if lucky...mind-boggling stuff!!!

Always our favourite day out at the snow, works out half the price of Baw Baw (you have to pay per person to toboggan there, as opposed to here). The toboggan run is a decent size and we'll maintained, the staff actually do make an effort to police annoying kids trying to walk up the slope (at Baw Baw they made no effort). There are plenty of places to just play in the snow for free (at Baw Baw all areas with snow are cordoned off unless you pay extra). The cafe/bistro has decent food and reasonaby priced. The staff are friendly, helpful & accommodating. They have fire pits around to warm up by which is a nice touch. You do not always have to carry chains, depending on forecast conditions. The drive up from Marysville is easier and quicker than that to Baw Baw, and there is more accommodation nearby, however you cannot choose stay on the mountain here.
