Walked this trail from Merricks General Store to the small group of shops at Red Hill, and return, took 1hr 20 mins each way. My husband & I are around 60 yrs old and fairly fit, the trail is easy to walk but I was tired by the time we finished! Beautiful scenery, occasional distant views of the ocean, the trail runs adjacent to the rear of rural properties. The trail path is wide, unpaved, clearly marked and generally flat, a little hilly in parts. We encountered lots of people out walking on the trail, often with children or dogs, and we passed a horse with rider walking the trail. There were also sections where the trail was very quiet and peaceful. When we got to Red Hill, we enjoyed coffee and a homemade muffin at the little Greek cafe, friendly service and the menu looked very tempting. There are public toilets within a short walk from the shops, but they are ‘long-drop’ and very smelly. No water in the toilet pump to flush or to wash your hands, OK if you’re desperate but I left feeling very unhygienic. Thank goodness one of the shops had hand sanitizer outside their entrance. On our return to Merrick, we stopped at the General Store (very popular) for coffee in their pretty front garden, there is a tiny cafe outlet alongside the...
Read moreGreat trail walk. It's predominantly flat, with a small uphill slope, as you walk back to the packing lot. I have a bad back, and this walk was good, with barely, if any, pain.
There is a small playground for children and some bbq's as well, which would make for a nice day out for lunch with the family and doggos (on lead). There are drop dunnies, not flushable ones, the hand wash station doesn't work, unfortunately. Make sure to bring your own water with you also.
The only negative thing I have to say about this beautiful place, people who walk their dogs here seem to not pick up after their dogs, which really ruins the experience for others. Be responsible, and clean up...
Read moreThis has become a must on gorgeous afternoons and evenings. Hell, anytime. In particular, I've found it to be an incredibly soothing walk when the mind won't go quiet, or the world is too loud. Stunning views over vineyards and orchards, seeing out over Port Phillip island. It's a perfect walk for families with youngsters or those who enjoy gentler hikes/strolls. You can leisure along at your own pace, go a bit harder jogging, or bring a bike (or one wheel). If you're lucky, you might...
