This park is large and has a good balance of open space and facilities such as picnic shelters, BBQs, seating, toilets and plenty of parking. In amongst this is some very natural terrain, where if you wander down some narrow paths, you’d think you were in the middle of the bush hundreds of kilometres away from the city.
You have direct access to the Yarra River, where at one point there is a kayaking course and at another an elevated viewing area of some rapids.
There are many kilometres of sealed bike and walking paths that loop right around the park and through it. The paths also connect with the main Yarra Trail heeding into the city at one end and out to Diamond Creek and beyond at the other.
Mountain bike trails and orienteering courses are also featured in this park.
Up on the highest point, the is an old homestead which used to contain the “Mia Mia” indigenous art gallery. This is now unfortunately closed and the homestead can not be entered.
One of my favourite things about Westerfolds Park is the abundance of wildlife. You’d be very unlucky not to see a kangaroo or two, or most likely two dozen of the them that call the park home. Bird life a-plenty, you may see and hear the kookaburras from time to time. Just watch out for snakes, especially in the warmer months.
The park hosts a reputable dog training program on the weekends and a farmers market on the first Saturday of every month (mornings).
Covering 120 hectares, this place is magical and is a...

Read moreWesterfolds park is a gem of Australian Bush in the suburbs. Trails wind along beside the yarra river, with a foot bridge that joins to the main yarra trail. While there are many suburban parks along the yarra this is one of the prettiest.
The park has plenty of picnic tables and free gas barbecues available, easily accessible from the flat parking areas.
I remember in the 1980s the grassy hills of the park were easily visible from fitzsimons lane, but today it is surrounded by dense native trees that make it more like a forest.
From the parking area, there is quite a lot of traffic noise from the main road but on the western side it is very quiet.
There are paved trails with cyclists and walkers and dirt tracks for hikers and mountain bikes. Westerfolds is an awesome park and a...
