Worth a detour from the Pacific Highway if you're not in a rush. Surviving years of local logging, Bird Tree and Benaroon are two of the largest blackbutts in the entire state. Bird Tree picnic area is the ideal place to visit these imposing giants, with a short loop through old growth forest perfect for walking with children and requiring only moderate fitness.
The drive from the Pacific Highway to the picnic spot where the walk starts is quite rough and rocky in some areas. However, with some common sense and care, a regular car should be able to make the journey. Signage to the site is faultless. However, it would be great it there were information boards about these majestic trees on site.
