In 1969, when I was 14 (yr9 ASHS), my friends and I started using the old gravel quarry at the 'Snake Pit' site as a bike track which resembled the pushbike version of a scramble (MX) track. We used shovels and other basic tools to create a track with berms, jumps, drop offs and climbs. We only had standard 'grids', not BMX bikes, and would make improvements over the period of 2-3 years. We used it on and off and were very proud of 'our' track. When we hit upper school it was no longer cool for us to ride bikes, but I understand it continued to be used by younger kids. After year 12, 1973, I left Albany for uni and didn't return until 1978, and was dismayed to see that someone had redeveloped the site into concrete skate track and totally 'ruined' our track.
