It's a really nice, out of the way quiet area, but it is getting more popular as a place to visit on weekends. The scenery is lovely, the history behind the place is a bit sad, but overall, a lovely place to visit. Dogs are allowed on a leash. The lake is deep, dark and murky, creating almost a mirror which makes for beautiful, haunting photos, particularly when the mists are rolling through (pretty much this time of year - May through to about October). Easy walk for kids, its only about 5-10mins from the carpark (our toddler was fine). Lots of birdlife around. Quite a bit of bracken fern and greenery, as the moss gets good moisture in the Macedons. Just be very mindful of leeches as they are everywhere, not just the water (don't swim here, it's not allowed but you'll regret the hundreds of leeches). There is a notice says the water is deep so if you are going with kids just make sure you keep an eye on them as they might go to the edge of the lake.
