A WONDERFUL ASSET FOR THE PEOPLE OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA

For too long reservoirs like the one at Myponga have been places you drive past, surrounded by Cyclone fencing & closed to the public. But this has changed and how lucky we are.

Today my wife & I had the pleasure of walking the Myponga Reservoir Trail and it was an absolute delight. Last night we downloaded a map and this morning commenced the walk at the car park, where there are good, clean toilets and a water bottle refilling station. Within 50 metres we saw the first of many kangaroos and a large squadron of pelicans on the water with cormorants, ducks & black swans.

The well-signposted track on the south east side of the reservoir takes you through open plains, forested areas and native vegetation. It is suitable for walking, running & cycling and there were plenty of people enjoying the magnificent weather.

It was good to see so much water there in mid-summer and the views were magnificent, with several lookouts to just sit and enjoy the serenity as well as picnic sites for families to make the most of the location. The 3.3 km return walk takes about 60 minutes, or longer if you stop to just look or appreciate the scenery.

Later in the day (after lunch at Forktree Brewing) we drove back across the dam wall and stopped at the lookout on the western side of the reservoir for a stunning view of the reservoir, the dam wall and its spillway.

Congratulations to our government for making this so accessible. Highly...

Been coming here on the drive south as long as I can remember. So many times my grandparents would come this way to Yankalilla rather than the main road through Myponga.. It gives a great view of the reservoir and gully as well as beautiful views of the beach and coastline if you continue down the hill to Carrickalinga Beach and Normanville.

There are not much in the way of facilities at the lookout though, and last visit it appears as though they have permanently closed the...

Always has beautiful views over the reservoir and across to the hills. There hasn't been public toilets here for almost 20 years so make sure you use the facilities down in Myponga if you are planning on picnicking up at the lookout. And if you are on a bike there NOT a water fill here so plan your route and fill-up stops accordingly. A drive or ride over the dam wall is of course a must-do whilst you are there.
