Gould Memorial Drive, Buxton, Victoria – A Photographer’s Paradise of Natural Splendor♥️.

Gould Memorial Drive🚘😊, stretching between Buxton and Marysville in Victoria, is a breathtaking scenic route that feels like stepping into a living postcard. This iconic avenue, lined with majestic Lombardi Poplars, is a must-visit for nature enthusiasts, photographers, and anyone seeking a serene escape from the urban grind. Known as the gateway to Marysville, this drive is a testament to the beauty of Victoria’s High Country and a tribute to the vision of Mr. Lloyd Gould, who planted these trees to enhance the region’s charm.

Natural Beauty and the Magnificent Trees🌳 The heart of Gould Memorial Drive’s allure lies in its avenue of towering Lombardi Poplars, which create a mesmerizing canopy that transforms with the seasons. In autumn, the trees burst into a symphony of vibrant yellows, golds, and oranges, casting a warm glow that feels almost magical, especially in the late afternoon sun when long shadows accentuate the dramatic vista. Summer brings lush green foliage, while winter’s bare branches offer a stark, elegant silhouette against the misty backdrop of the Yarra Ranges. Even on overcast days, the drive retains a haunting beauty, with the changing light altering the hues and mood of the landscape. The trees, meticulously planted over years, frame the road perfectly, making every turn a visual delight and a testament to the area’s natural splendor.

A Photography📸 Paradise For photographers, Gould Memorial Drive is nothing short of paradise. The symmetrical rows of poplars provide endless opportunities for capturing stunning compositions, whether you’re shooting wide-angle landscapes or focusing on the intricate details of the foliage. The seasonal color changes offer a fresh perspective with every visit, making it a year-round destination for shutterbugs. Early morning or late afternoon light is ideal, as the soft, golden hues enhance the vibrancy of the trees and create striking contrasts. The drive’s open vistas and lack of heavy traffic make it easy to pull over at designated spots to set up your shot or even take a short walk to explore different angles. Whether you’re a professional with a DSLR or an amateur with a smartphone, the raw beauty of this place ensures every photo is Instagram-worthy. Bring a picnic to one of the rest areas along the route, and you can spend hours immersed in the tranquil environment, capturing memories that will last a lifetime.

Amenities and Accessibility While Gould Memorial Drive is primarily a scenic drive, its simplicity is part of its charm. There are no formal facilities like toilets or dedicated parking lots directly along the drive, but the road is well-maintained, and there are several safe pull-over spots for photography or to simply soak in the views. For amenities, nearby Buxton and Marysville offer conveniences like cafes, restrooms, and small shops. The drive is easily accessible by car, with the road being smooth and suitable for all vehicles. Visitors should note that public transport options are limited.

👉 Distance from Melbourne Gould Memorial Drive is conveniently located just under two hours from Melbourne, making it an ideal day trip or weekend getaway. The drive from the city center to Buxton covers approximately 100–110 km, depending on the route, with the Maroondah Highway offering a scenic approach through the Yarra Valley. The journey itself is a treat, passing through picturesque towns like Yea and Alexandra, with the imposing Cathedral Ranges visible in the distance. This proximity to Melbourne makes Gould Memorial Drive an accessible escape for city dwellers craving nature without committing to a long haul.

Such a great section of road to drive through, especially in autumn! But it is now getting too touristy with many people standing in the middle of the road as I drive past, the road has 100km speed limit as it’s about 5kms out from the Main Street of Marysville so please be careful of just don’t stop here at all! There is a lovely picnic area just around the bend heading back towards Marysville by the river that I’d recommend more to stop off at especially if you have kids! The street is right in the middle of Buxton and Marysville where there is a lovely place to stay called Maryton park! if you’re headed back to Melbourne it’s about the same amount of time to drive back through the Main Street of Marysville or to go to Buxton then left at the T intersection to go back...

On a Saturday morning, leaving home well before the sun rise, drove my way to this place 100km away through the thick fog starting at Lilydale and along Yarra Valley wineries which is another experience by itself. By the time I passed by Healesville, the fog starting to clear and the warm ray of the morning sun sipped through the thick Black Spur forest. Reach Marysville with a clear blue sky, and Gould Memorial Drive is just 5 minutes out of Marysville. There was just a few cars passed & the rows of Lombardy Poplar on both sides of the road were a beautiful scene - blue sky, yellow leaves in perfect harmony. Nice thing is that the sides of the road so wide for parking and not have to worry about stopping to take...

A great spot to visit during Autumn, if you want to do a relaxed day trip. This beautiful lane is situated on a short drive from Melbourne. It's an ideal place to watch the Autumn/ Fall colours with the towering poplar trees. 🍁 The trees are beginning to turn yellow now and it will be fully yellow in 1-2 weeks from now. There wasn't a lot of people at this spot over the last weekend, so there were plenty of photo opportunities without the crowd! 🙂
