This is not like a zoo. There are only two mallee fowl currently in a small enclosure. The centre is responsible for hatching, raising and releasing birds to increase their chances of survival. They are also very timid so be patient and they'll come into view. The information displayed is excellent, for all ages, and about the habitat too. Staff were very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. I felt the $12 entry was reasonable to support their conservation efforts. We visited at the start of the wildflower season and theres a short marked trail to the right of the building where I found some orchids and other wildflowers beginning to appear. The cafe has good prices and the chips and coffee were excellent. There is also a gift shop, exhibition gallery space and the local library in...

We made a special trip out to Ongerup to visit the Mallee Fowl Sanctuary and it was well worth the trip. We enjoyed a wonderful Ploughman’s Picnic and coffees in the cafe before our time in the Yongerup Mallee Fowl Centre information displays. It was wonderful to learn about the community commitment to helping the local Mallee Fowl populations recover. And I learned so much about Mallee Fowl life cycles! We thoroughly enjoyed the aviary experience, seeing what a wonderful habitat the local pair are occupying. The conversations wirh staff were wonderful, and we went back for takeaway coffees as the first ones...

Amazingly dedicated team looking after the Aussie Battler ground dwelling bird the humble Mallee fowl. Lots to see for a small entrance fee and a cafe as well. If you are passing by then this place is well worth a visit for a look into the history of the area, the land clearing, a coffee & snack then go watch the elusive birds doing what they do best which is forage and keep a wary eye for predators. A fly net is also a good idea outdoors as there were a million flies...

This truly excellent centre near the village of Ongerup was built to support conservation efforts for the Malleefowl - the little Aussie Battler of inland Australia. For a modest fee you can view the aviary and see the Malleefowl that it is home to, and if you're lucky see some mound-building in progress. Centre has also hosts a lovely cafe run by friendly volunteers. Highly recommended.
